I have had good success eliminating a migraine prodrome aura. I cured it by using a special eye exercise. The procedure was intended to work the eyes and the visual centers of the brain harder than usual by forcing them to do a cross-eye fusion procedure. The speculation behind the possible success using this method was based upon a reported brain scan done during migraine attacks which showed an abnormal blood flow to the visual cortex located in the back of the brain. These cross-eye procedures force the brains visual centers to do far more work than is usually required of them and that forces the brain to allocate the blood flow in a different way from what they were doing to create the migraine aura.
This is an experimental procedure which I performed upon myself. I am only reporting what appeared to work for me and I do not necessarily suggesting that you try the experiment so any results you may have, good, bad or inconclusive are strictly upon your own recognizance. However, below are the cross-eye charts which I used successfully to eliminate my visual hallucinations in about three minutes. Usually it takes about 30 to 50 minutes in a dark room with a hot or cold bag on the back of my head to clear up the aura. I have tried both the hot and cold treatments but found that tapping the back of the head worked better. But this cross-eye treatment worked best of all.
What works for me is to look cross-eyed at my finger tip held between the flags about half way to the screen and then to slowly move it towards and away from my face while looking at my finger tip and thinking about the dot. At some point the central dots from the opposite fields fuse into one. When they fuse I slowly lower my finger out of sight while watching the dot. And then in about twenty seconds the light show begins. With Red-green target #36 I like to move my stare between the various smaller dots around the center and to slowly read the numbers and letters. If my eyes uncross I return my finger to the position where fusion took place and can usually get the fusion back in a few seconds.
I created these pictures for the cross-eye fusion experiments but I discovered that they confused my visual centers so much that the effort of fusion soon forced my brain to abandon migraine auras and give its attention to the fusion. Even under normal non-aura brain functioning these pictures created highly volatile liable images which will shift quickly through a variety of colors and golden blends.
For more detail on these cross-eye fusion experiments go to the previous mind fuzing experiments.
Here is a group of similar eye experiments with more instructions on how to cross your eyes. EYE EXPERIMENTS
Please remember these are experiments and you are totally responsible for any strange effects or results. I intended them for learning how your perception works and how it sometimes does very strange and unexpected things.

I’ve been suffering from complicated migraines for years now, and they are always accompanied by either auras or vertigo, and the vertigo is generally tied to an inability to focus my eyes. I ran across your exercise here and wanted to let you know that it — incredibly — is completely changing my day for the better. Thanks.

Thank you for the feedback. I only have migraines occasionally so my experience is quite limited. However in my case the effect was so quick and unexpected that I posted it. Our experiences may have been unrelated to the experiment so if you have another event and it works or doesn’t work please let me know. I haven’t had a prodrome since the day I posted that experiment so I have nothing more to report.

Thank you for sharing your solution. I get the impression that my experience is mild compared to some. Mine begins with a little difficulty focusing and develops within a minute or so to a blank, or greyed out area in the center of my area of sight.
I can usually stop this process by simply closing my eyes for 10/20 minutes.

This is interesting stuff. I’ve been looking for about twenty years for a “cure” or remedy for my silent migraines (all aura, no headache) and so far am making some headway, but I won’t bore you with the details which get very technical.
Let me say that “giving the visual cortex a LOT of work to do when the cortical spreading depression starts (the aura)” coincides exactly with my current thinking about the real underlying cause of CSD, which I think is an over-excitability of the visual neurons leading to a runaway and spreading depolarization. There is normally a kind of ‘negative-feedback’ system in operation with these neurons preventing the over-excitabilty leading to runaway CSD. I am guessing there is some malfunction with this negative feedback operation. As an electronics engineer, there is an exact parallel with electronic negative feedback here. If you remove the negative feedback from many amplifiers they will often go unstable due to increased gain, and the incidence then is of POSITIVE feedback. An easy common example is “howl-around” when a microphone and speaker are in the same room. Too much gain with the amp’s volume knob and howling and squealing result. Shouting in the mic. often stops this at least temporarily — and there is the parallel with this idea here, that of forcing the visual cortex to work with heavy, high amplitude inputs, the red and green bias between the two eyes making the visual cortex work all the time.
Next time I get an aura, I will report.

Thank you George for your careful thoughts on migraine.
These are intermittent events for me, and fortunately for me I have not had much activity this last year. My last experiments were in holding 110 degree water in my mouth for about fifteen seconds, spitting it out and replacing it immediately from a quart container of this hot water. The goal of this procedure was to dilate the blood vessels in my head, and in the visual centers where the migraine probably originates. You can get more on this by typing in [migraine] in the [SEARCH] box at the top of my blog page. Please let us migraine sufferers know how your experiments go – good, bad, or indifferent. Perhaps we will discover some combination of treatments will give better results.

To all who suffers from migraine aura. May i ask you how often do you have your migraine aura. What are the ways in order to lessen or minimize the attack cause i find it disturbing during work.

I found your post by googling ‘eye exercise migraine’ after finding an interesting Youtube video about using an eye exercise developed for dyslexia to help with migraines. It is similar to what you are suggesting here.
I have been suffering a migraine all day and just tried the exercise and it seems to have helped which is a big surprise! I am VERY curious to follow up on this.
I am right eye dominant and have right sided migraines, abdominal, common and complicated. I do not experience visual aura but have sensory sensitivity, cognitive changes and sometimes aphasia. There is very little showing up on this topic.
I’m interested to hear about any further insights you may have had on the subject.

just tried it now .. seems working .. it made me overcome associated symptoms of migraine like fatigability, phono/photophobia.
I’m a Chronic migraine sufferer which means i’m always (nearly 24 hr/ 30 days a month) in the prodrome or postdrome phase. I have mild headaches that in times of stress gets more severe.
I’m going to try it tomorrow when i wake up and i hope that it work for me.
i’ll come by in few days later to write my experience ..
thanks Genius !

What is this sorcery? I am currently suffering from horrible prodrome and my eyes were all over the place not being able to focus with vertigo and shaking vision. I won’t say this cured it 100% but I’m definitely feeling a lot better, I’ll try to do it for longer during lunch break when there’s nobody in the office so people don’t look at me like I’m a psycho haha.

Hi Stasia
Here are some later experiments you might try.
Let me know if you have any success. My prodromes have gotten so mild it is difficult for me to do experiments.

Wow! Thank you for sharing! I had my first ocular migraine today and used the flags, and the zig zag line in my left eye was much improved! I still have blind spots right now in my vision field, but having the flickering go away is great!
