On my previous blogs I lamented about the lack of preparation by the world’s health watchdogs. Basically, I have complained about those people who are responsible for creating new vaccines to prevent infections and those drugs to give to us when we do get the the diseases such as the newly evolved swine-flu. I have suggested to them some new ways which might be used for slowing the creation and theĀ spread of the epidemic. But so far nothing has happened. Here is my list of 16 reasonable actions which would obviously help at Reducing the flu threat for everyone but so far at least no one in authority has listened and all of the materials which I have seen coming from them are easily classed as too little and what does come will come as too late. For most people if it is a severe pandemic hits it will be far too little and far too late and many people will die needlessly.
At present, we have all been worried about this new swine-flu and if it will hit hard this coming winter and one would think that the primere medical journal JAMA (the Journal of the American Medical Association) would be at the forefront of issuing good advice to the doctors. This is the journal read by most medical doctors and so it is the advice which you will be getting when the time comes and it will come. Read it and weep.
The critical part for you, a sufferer of the flu would be the TREATMENT
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Get lots of rest and appropriate sleep.
- Inhaling steam may help to ease congestion of the sinuses.
- Temporary use of an over-the-counter nasal spray may help relieve congestion, but these should not be used for more than 5 days at a time.
- See you doctor if your symptoms last more than a few days.
- Antibiotics may be prescribed if bacterial sinusitis is suspected. It is important to take the full course of antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor. Do not skip doses or stop taking the medication when you begin to feel better.
- SeekĀ medical attention immediately if you develop a high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, tender swelling near the eyes, or changes in your mental status such as confusion or delirium.
There isn’t much here you wouldn’t expect Imhotep the first physician back 5,000 years ago to have recommended. There is one small point which he would have mentioned, “Kill as few patients as possible.”
