The one hundred square mile area just south of Elon Musk’s gigafactory twenty miles east of Reno, Nevada (at lat/long 39.538, -119.44) has one hundred square miles of high rolling hills with very few people. It is a good place for free-ranging robots to build solar farms because it is next to where solar panels are being made. With no need to use public highways all the legal access problems would be minimal, but the problems of transportation and construction would be realistic.
Portions of this area could be set aside for exclusive robot use with the purpose of solving the problems of setting up a large solar farm that has various types of moderately difficult terrains to cope with. It also has controllable public access so the robots wouldn’t be tampered with by people.
Another possibility for a solar farm is a salt flat 50 miles east of the factory on highway US-80 (lat/long 39.538, -119.44) that has over 200 square miles of flat open area where easy automatic constructions could be made by robots. What needs to be developed are totally robot-made solar farms where no humans have been involved from the factory to abundant electricity being put into the electric grid.
We could call the little village of robots in the hills robovilles and the larger communities robotons and the big city-sized ones robocits. The goal is to set up a totally self-sufficient robot society, a robosoc that can provide cheap power for human civilization to create its food and other necessary things. Fossil fuels will soon begin running low for human consumption and will become more and more expensive in the not distant future. We need to make these robot societies so they can make electric power for us as cheaply as the fossil fuels we have grown used to having.
The hundreds of kinds of human food require a massive amount of ingenuity and specialized equipment to create. Robot food is much simpler by comparison. Electricity is their food and it can be made several ways, but in the long run various forms of solar collection are sufficient and the most direct. If solar panels can be made automatically that becomes an easy way for robots to sustain their society’s food source into the billion year future.
Little we make will last a hundred years, but the robots we create now could sustain themselves for billions of years.
