It is necessary to change the following list of aspirations because it has changed so much from the stated UU goals that it no longer aligns well with their present world views. Not that it is contradictory in any way, it’s just that I believe that it isn’t fair to them for me to be making proclamations about what I think they believe or projecting what I believe onto what I think that they should believe. That’s prolix and the whole statement of this belief is intended to be brief.

Today I read version #15 to a small group of writers in search of some criticism. They listened carefully and we discussed #6 at length, and we as a group thought #6—making a habit of doing kind things that help us love one another and our Universe. would be better stated as 6—making a habit of clearly acknowledging other people and their needs to love one another and our Universe.

Version #16

We find hope and give kindness by:

  1. —discovering the orderly nature of our Universe, so we can help ourselves and others benefit from all that is possible.
  2. —creating an ideally balanced human society, so you and I and everyone else can have a meaningful life in a sustainable world.
  3. —dedicating our wisdom to the great tradition of alleviating the suffering of all living beings.
  4. —helping one another use our abilities for our own and others’ well-being.
  5. —appreciating that we as a fellowship of people expressing diverse views are discovering wonderful new ways of living.
  6. —making a habit of clearly acknowledging other people and their need to love one another and our Universe.

There were several other rewrites before Attempt #6

Attempt #6

We Unitarian Universalists seek to:

  1. —discover the orderly nature of the Universe so we may be in greater harmony with what it offers us.
  2. —minimize all suffering and to enhance human health and abundance.
  3. —create and maintain a well-balanced society so everyone may live within a sustainable world.
  4. —acknowledge that we as individuals are too removed from our own invisible thinking processes to ever fully understand our own convictions and reasons.
  5. —acknowledge that we as a group of involved, informed people with conflicting views are more likely to find solutions to conflicts than an isolated individual.
  6. —make a deliberate effort to strengthen every individual’s understanding of the highest values of which they can become aware of and make real.

Attempt #7 is written in a final form

  4. —acknowledge our personal limitations and choose to develop our positive responses to other beings’ needs.
  5. —acknowledge that we as an interacting group of people with different views are more likely to discover mutually beneficial opportunities than we will find as solitary individuals.
  6. —make a deliberate effort to strengthen every person’s moral personality and help it to become a part of their daily lives.

This is getting better to my way of thinking, but what will tomorrow bring?

Suggestions are welcome…

[ Below is another rewrite. The method used this time was to take each word and check through that word’s synonyms searching for a more subtle nuance to the basic ideas.]

The sentiments presented in Try #11 sounded good to me, but when I read them to some non-UU friends they seemed a bit put off by the cool, overly intellectual tone of the piece. They accepted the ideas as reasonable but didn’t seem enthused about joining the Fellowship. The problem is a personal failing of mine that plagued me throughout my various careers. I can do very well in the tasks assigned to me, better than most of my peers, but I lacked enthusiasm. The seeking proposed in the piece lacks enthusiasm! It needs to change the mood from “That’s a good idea” to “Wow! I really like that, and can do it, too!” That is the goal with this attempt to probe into what Unitarian Universalists seek.

The old version
We Unitarian Universalists seek to:

  1. —discover the orderly nature of our Universe, so we may be in a better relationship with all that it offers.
  2. —create and maintain an ideally balanced human society, so every individual may flourish within a meaningful and sustainable world.
  3. —dedicate our lives and wisdom to minimizing the suffering of all living beings.
  4. —help one another recognize and use our unique abilities to maximize the physical and mental health of all beings.
  5. —acknowledge that we as a fellowship of people expressing diverse views are more likely to discover beneficial possibilities than we can as individuals.
  6. —make habitual the kind actions that help all of us grow in understanding and affection for one another and for our Universe.

The new version with more enthusiasm.
We Unitarian Universalists are:

  1. —discovering the orderly nature of our Universe, so we can help it and ourselves benefit from everything that is possible.
  2. —creating an ideally balanced human society, so you and I and everyone else can have a meaningful life.
  3. —dedicating our wisdom and energy to the great tradition of minimizing the suffering of all living beings.
  4. —helping one another recognize and use our personal abilities to maximize our health and others’ well-being.
  5. —appreciating that we as a fellowship of people expressing diverse views are discovering wonderful new ways of living.
  6. —making a habit of doing kind things that help us love one another and our Universe.

By making the statements into easy action terms it becomes possible for people to understand how easy it is to do good things and how it will help them to live better lives.

I have been trying to write a general world view for the Unitarian Universalists, and thus for myself too, and have gone through many versions before I began publishing what I thought were final drafts on this blog. Attempt #7 seen below appeared close to what I was seeking and yet today in an outside group meeting, where I was talking about my spiritual decision-making in the past, some people stated, not personally to me as that would be out of form for our group, that our group had taken a negative turn that made them feel uncomfortable. They wanted to be happy and this wasn’t even neutral. So, applying those thoughts to the statement below, let me see if I can make it into a more enthusiastic document that would itself bring pleasure and happiness. See below for Strikeout with lines through them and new inserted words in italics
