The data look like the Covid is going away, but because there are still millions of cases still active it isn’t appropriate to stop wearing masks. Another month of doing the things we have habitually been doing would hasten the end of the epidemic and reduce it to a seasonal “flu” that only needs a booster shot.

The Covid Omicron wave is dropping, and if nothing changes too much this pandemic seems to be winding down, except for the long haul liabilities created. But, I’m still doing all the precautions just to hang in with the easy-to-do habits. Why change a habit that’s easy to do for a while longer?

These last two weeks saw a rapid drop in the Omicron variant worldwide, which followed the trend first set in South Africa. If the trend continues we may see a remarkable drop by July. Unfortunately, a new problem called Long Covid has come up, in which the disease takes up a possibly permanent residence in its victims. They are mildly sick but functional, but they may become permanent reservoirs of the Covid disease and be capable of spreading it to other people. People with Long Covid may respond to vaccinations that will kill the disease. Over two years into this disease and it is still giving us unpleasant surprises.

The Covid epidemic isn’t over until the numbers drop to a number of cases that can be dealt with using normal medical procedures. Because the hospitals are totally swamped at the moment, let us guess that dropping ninety percent would bring them back to the Covid taking up only part of the hospitals’ capacity. Using that as a guess, the death rate would have to drop to 30,000 per month, that is 1,000 per day, before Covid could be coped with using standard available procedures. Today’s death rate is about 11,000. The last time we were near that projected goal was in mid-March of 2020. That was about two and a half months into the Covid pandemic. Strangely, that is just after China implemented their lockdown of several of their cities and for the Chinese, the pandemic came to a screeching halt. The rest of the world didn’t follow that draconian procedure and lost about six million people.

I much prefer living in our less conformist world, but the price in people’s lives is enormous.

The optimistic hopes by everyone that the Covid pandemic is coming to an end keep getting dashed by reality. If from the beginning the statements had been “this is going to be a long haul, and you better do everything you can to adapt to the problem,” we wouldn’t be having so much trouble.

The media and pundits are trying to stay positive and keep telling us we are getting tired of the Covid and Omicron. The economy is picking up even though a couple of million people haven’t gone back to work yet. There are help wanted posters with bonus offers on many business storefronts. The world incidence rate of infections is at an all-time high, and the large number of milder Omicron cases are finally showing up in slower onset of deaths, but the numbers are bigger.

I have been writing, actually rewriting, proverbs all day for months, and consider this routine couple of hours updating the Covid chart as relaxation. It is routine and boring but kind of interesting watching it grow.

Notice the steep upslope of the World Case line (TOP THICK BLUE LNE). That is the steepest slope since the spring of 2020 and it is due to the high transmissibility of Omicron. Here in the United States, where about 30% of people are less than fully vaccinated, that means the disease has plenty of opportunities to spread. Most of the deaths have been among those people who have refused to get vaccinated. Freedom of choice here in this country has its problems because people are prone to make mistakes when there is lots of fake media. It is not illegal to spread lies in this country, which in this case has led to nearly a million deaths. The media companies discovered they get more viewership if they publish scary stories. They claim they are only giving people what they want to see. Who could complain about being able to see what they want to see? … Even if it is actually killing them.

These charts are showing a steep rise in Covid cases this last two months, but not much increase in deaths yet. The deaths usually lag about five weeks behind the observed infection, but fortunately, those countries where the Omicron hit first haven’t had as serious a death rate. There is a possible reason for the high infection rate and the low death rate in the fact that the later mutations like Delta and Omicron added more components to the outside of their basic molecule which slowed the speed of the disease development to where the victim’s body could cope more effectively.

A second thing that seems to have happened is that because of the high infection rate and low observed intensity of symptoms many people had the disease and didn’t know it. Omicron was very mild for most people, and those people continued their daily routine and spread the disease widely. That means that the whole community of people had the Omicron and the victims are immunized to catch all of the earlier forms of the COVID.

If that supposition is the operating factor it would mean the Covid epidemic would end this summer. Many people would catch the disease in its mild form and confer immunity to others.

The chart has been enlarged and expanded for two more years. It has been cleaned up a bit from last week’s first attempt. The nonstop idle hope that this disease is about to come to an end has led to a consistent loss of real action to bring it to an end. I have said that a more realistic approach is to acknowledge that it will be with us for a long time and we must adapt to its presence and protect ourselves as best we can.

This chart needed to have a larger space to grow. I hope the lines on this two-year expansion look absolutely flat. That would indicate the pandemic is over.
