I copied the article below the photo from Facebook because I don’t know how to link to the article. I will link it properly when told how to do so.

A month or so after I departed the US Air Force, I ended up on Telegraph Avenue, Berkeley, California. I had just resigned my commission as a B-47 pilot because I didn’t want anything to do with killing innocent people with H-bombs. Julia was one of my first friends there and we met every night at Robbie’s Cafeteria, just two blocks up the street from where she is standing in this photo. She lived in the Berkeley Inn in the room just touching her shoulder until it burned down. We were part of a strange group of half a dozen people; Marty Schwartz was always “word processing” his PhD thesis using whiteout, while Julia and I and one or two others listened to Marty Horowitz talk. He was one of the most interesting people I ever met in Berkeley and I lived there on that street for fifty years. She wrote some of her poems about him, but never about me. I was far too normal and not nearly weird or desperate enough for her to consider poem-worthy. Horowitz had a much more interesting story … recently out of jail, for loaning a pistol to a guy who then went and murdered a Cal professor with it. Also, he had been a scientist who worked on the development of the atomic bomb, and he claimed he had derailed a street car back in Brooklyn when he was a teenager. I often thought he was the model for Professor Farnsworth of TVs Futurama. There were a couple of Harley riders who hung out with us; at that time I too was riding a motorcycle, although it was what was considered a vastly inferior one, a Triumph.

There were many, many famous and infamous things that happened within a block of where Julia is standing. Major demonstrations for Free Speech, People’s Park, Viet Nam; and lots of famous and infamous people too.  Directly across the street is the Caffe Mediterraneum and we used to joke that the pole holding up the middle of it was the center of the world. The Med was only closed on Christmas day and a little ritual Julia and I had was to stand in the alcove set into the face of it at midnight and talk about the good ole days. I stood in that exact spot innumerable times after the Med closed at midnight until 1am talking with people who refused to admit that that day had ended. That it has now ended for Julia brings sad tears to my eyes.

Julia Vinograd, the Berkeley Poet Known as ‘The Bubble Lady’ Dies at 75

by Tom Dalzell

“Julia Vinograd died last night. She was Berkeley’s poet laureate and she was the Bubble Lady.

Born in 1943, Vinograd got her BA at Cal and then earned an MA at the University of Iowa at the Iowa Writers Workshop. Her studies focused on poetry. Literary and creative influences that she cited include William Butler Yeats, Elinor Wylie, Federico Garcia Lorca (in English), Leonard Cohen (as a poet), and Yehuda Amichai. While at Cal, she was taught and inspired by Thom Gunn, Gary Snyder, and Josephine Miles. At Iowa, Vinograd says Paul Carroll “blew the lid off all my safety boxes.”

Vinograd returned to Berkeley in 1967 to find massive cultural and political changes in full swing. “Everyone had long hair, bare feet, bright clothes, and looked like they’d just stepped out of a tapestry.”

Telegraph Avenue was her stomping ground, her nation. She lived at the Berkeley Inn and spent her days at the Caffe Med, drinking coffee and watching the world pass by. She described the first years of writing in Berkeley: “I decided Telegraph was Desolation Row, and I liked it that way. I was in total culture shock. I scuttled around with my mouth and my notebook both open, staring at what I saw and trying to write everything down at once. I forgot about writing styles and just wrote. I didn’t want any of it to get away.”

The poetry continued, honoring the lost, the misfits, the downtrodden, the abandoned, the wild and the free. She was called a street poet. I am not sure what that means unless it means that she wrote about the street in the figurative sense of the lower socioeconomic strata. I know this – she was for decades part of Berkeley’s cultural DNA. She wrote 50 volumes of poetry, much of which is about Berkeley. She probably could only have existed in Berkeley.

And then there was Julia Vinograd, the bubble lady.

During the People’s Park uprising in May 1969, Vinograd was troubled by a sense of impending violence. She lived right on Telegraph Avenue, the artery that bled so profusely on May 15. In a moment that evoked Allen Ginsberg, Vinograd bought some bubble soap and went to Telegraph Avenue to blow bubbles. It set a tone. It helped defuse. And she did it for the rest of her life. She was known to generations of Cal students simply as The Bubble Lady.

Julia Vinograd lived her life with Dylan’s “Desolation Row” as the soundtrack, Berkeley and Telegraph Avenue of the last 50 years swirling around her, saints and angels and martyrs and holy men. Julia Vinograd made real for us those who are wanting and lacking and forgotten and invisible. She did this with humor and verve and, as Herb Caen would say, brio. In her poem “On the Berkeley Inn, Where I lived for 15 Years, Being Torn Down,” she wrote: “Were we all crazy? Mostly we were friends / And with friends it’s not a pertinent question.”

In 2004, Berkeley honored Vinograd with a lifetime achievement award. City Councilman Kriss Worthington presented the proclamation to her at the Berkeley Poetry Festival. (See video below).

When Julia and her sister Debbie were girls, they sat by a Ming lamp in their grandfather’s house. The girls thought that the lamp’s name was Ming. Julia made up stories about Ming’s life. There were five green marbles. Julia told Debbie stories about the marbles. Debbie, came to Berkeley in 1973 to see her big sister Julia and stayed, painting as Julia wrote poetry. Debbie sat with Julia the night she died. Somewhere in that room were Ming and the five marbles.”

My responsibility and yours, Self actualizing a sentient Universe, The ultimate kindness

Humanity’s goal must be to grab the Universe by its bootstraps and pull it into a full consciousness of itself so it can self-actualize its potentials. It is my belief that we are now at the moment in time when we must commit to helping our Universe to become conscious. We have been hanging our toes over the edge of oblivion ever since the creation of H-bombs in the 1950s, and a tiny miscalculation would put all of us into a thin geologic layer of dirt already forming and labeled the Anthropocene. We can and must take our society to the next level of responsibility for  helping the Universe to evolve from a vast amount of random matter into an equally vast amount of coherent matter being organized to an ultimate purpose. The current random natural trend seems to be toward a cold dark place where ultimately nothing will be happening. And yet, before that time comes it would be possible for our universe to be unified into a thinking being to do magnificent things.

Humanity now has the infrastructure for taking raw natural materials and converting them into thinking matter that could form a society that could propagate to stars and planets within our Milky Way galaxy. In the time that it would take to accomplish that grand scheme there might be ways to move on to other galaxies that are now only dim glows in the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (HUDF) photo.

How can I eliminate my false belief that this is a worthy goal and that I can help to get it started when I believe this is what the whole Universe needs you and me to do?

It’s a big job helping the Universe to self-actualize and we must get started while we can.

Our time is now and it won’t last for a billion years.

Building a robot society, Robot society, Self sustaining robots are needed., Time to build a robot society.

If humanity is to move forward with the object of helping the Universe to become an intelligent being capable of self-actualization, we must do some necessary things very soon. We have the proven capacity to create computers with sufficient capability to solve unexpected problems. We have the capacity to move people into near-Earth space for decades at a time, and into interstellar space with machines that will communicate with us over billions of miles. We have the capacity to create a self-sustaining robot society that can live for billions of years.

But why would we want to create a robot society? First, because we are short-lived individuals, with millions of years as a very optimistic future duration for our evolving society. Second, because to help the Universe to actualize its next level of being will require billions of years. Unless our society decides to move forward with this project it will never be done by us here on Earth. Because of the vast numbers of extraterrestrial planets, (~1 x 10^20 ), these kinds of robot societies will probably be created many times elsewhere, but the time to contact them will be impossibly long for us living people to experience them.

If these other living societies are like ours they will be facing the same kinds of existential threats of extinction from their high-tech weapons as we do. Few of these societies will rise to the challenge of creating self-sustaining robot societies, but it is these kinds of living societies that have the potential for creating the robot societies that do have the capacity for existing for the billions of years needed for the whole Universe to become fully self-actualized.

A. Sandberg and N. Bostrom,  in “Global Catastrophic Risks Survey, ” Technical Report 2008-1 (2008), Future of Humanity Institute, Oxford University, pp. 1-5. The chart below is condensed a bit from At Least KNOW THIS p.283 by Guy P. Harrison

What are the odds that Homo sapiens makes it to 2100?

RISK             million dead — billion dead — Extinction

Nanotech        25%               10%               5%

Intelligent AI   10                    5                   5

Wars               98                    30                  2

Pandemic         30                   10                  2

Nuclear war      30                   10                  1

Nano                 5                     1                  0.5

Natural            60                     5                   0.05

Terrorism          15                    1                    0.03

TOTAL RISK    n/1                   n/a                19%

Those are risk projections and are speculative, but they do give the realistic idea that in eighty years there is a 19% chance humanity will be extinct. When I was a B-47 pilot in 1960, and was about to be carrying megaton H-bombs around, it appeared the chances were about 50% I would be using some of those bombs. I said I would do as told, but that I didn’t want anything to do with that. I repeated that enough times that they let me go. That was only a few months before the Cuba Missile Crisis, which came very close to exterminating humanity. In the short run, things are a little safer now, but for the project I am proposing we need to get moving because it is for the very long run, and in that time frame we are extinct.

The time is now to get started building a robot-based society.

In the beginning of the conscious Universe there was RFID.

RFID (Radio-frequency identification) is one method for Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC). These systems are already ubiquitous and we may feel that our privacy is being violated and that is no doubt already true, but we must compare the advantages we get to the disadvantages we suffer. My privacy has been compromised since the day I was born back in 1935 because even then my residence was known and my phone number published in the local phone book and I could be precisely located and contacted almost instantly. The loss of privacy now extends to purchasing things in a grocery store and having anyone with RFID reading equipment able to track me or with my cell phone to track me to within a few feet, and if I am talking on the phone to know that it is me and exactly where I am, even when far from home. The point is our privacy is largely a myth. Another point is the manipulation of our thoughts by modern technology by using a few known facts about us and then projecting personalized information to us that will influence our moods and voting choices. All of those things about RFIC and AIDC should concern us, but what those technologies might do for our species, in the long run, is to create more moments of human happiness and thriving.

RFID enables the coming robot society to quickly identify things precisely and communicate their exact location and functionality to the net. Perhaps it is time to identify that entity with a unique personal name, for easier usage. A name that is derivative of its already existing identity is easier to remember and use so let’s just call it Thenet. The idea is to have everything labeled with something like an RFID so it can be used in a productive way by the robot society of the future. Each individual silicon being that has a self-directive being I’ve been thinking of as a robot, but it will be supervised by Thenet, who will function to optimize the health of the whole society of robots and humans. The primary goal of this optimization is to support a human population to maximize its longevity and health.

This is an important goal because the longevity of the seven billion population of humanity at present is in serious doubt because of the vast number of H-bombs possessed by about a dozen independent entities. The number of trigger points is probably much greater because under some circumstances the authorization for use of the weapons is delegated to field personnel. If one H-bomb goes off in an ugly way the whole system probably would go hyper with terrified humans with big bombs at their fingertips, and that’s where humanity has been for sixty-seven years, but it can’t last forever.

When Thenet is functioning to maximize humanity’s longevity the H-bombs will be retired and humanity can drift into a sustainable lifestyle.

How to maximize human pleasure.

A robot society, Building a robot society, human survival, Long term human survival

This blog has been supporting the evolution of the human species into its next stage of development. There are two ways this is presently progressing, first by CRISPR-mediated DNA enhancement and second by transitioning into a transhuman robot-associated society. CRISPR has the potential to perfect humans in their present form into a healthier and longer-lived species, and everyone would live more of their years as vigorous adults. There is a problem, however, in that our population even as it is will consume some of the Earth’s natural resources to exhaustion, and it may prove impossible to find enough alternatives to those missing resources to support billions of people. There needs to be some kind of political arrangement to accommodate a large human population which includes a high percentage of the longer-lived individuals. That would require somehow overriding the Darwinian-driven life tradition of reproducing maximally and letting the excess population endure deadly risks such as starvation. That seems like an ugly way to go, but it won’t go that way because independent H-bomb-possessing nations will wage wars to get the resources needed to maintain their people. Those wars would likely bring an end to our species and the loss of the benefits of long, healthy lives for most people.

The second route is to quickly develop our already existing robot society to be self-sustaining and needing little or no human development or maintenance. That society has very different demands on the Earth’s resources than our human society and yet it can and has been supplying us with many things which we value.

The common requirement of both humans and robots is energy. Humans must have food energy which is derived from the sun, and we desire fossil energy, which is also derived from the sun, for creating food and other pleasurable activities. Fossil energy will last a hundred or maybe two hundred years but it is finite, whereas solar energy will last for a billion years; thus both humans and robots will be using solar energy exclusively as their primary source in a thousand years and probably much sooner. Solar energy may be converted into petroleum products and fuel energy for special uses but it is derived at some cost of time and effort from the solar sources.

If the population is at present levels it may be difficult to create that much energy and wars will destroy not only the people but the competing nation’s infrastructure. Wars would destroy the robot society and its life-sustaining energy supplies. Thus it becomes imperative that there is an absolute end to solving political problems by resort to wars. That can be more easily accomplished if there is a small enough human population to be easily fed and entertained by the robot society.

There need to be living human beings for there to be the opportunity for pleasure, and that requires time for our species to live. Put simply, we might sustain ten billion people for ten years, and then go extinct as a species. Or, alternatively, we might with the cooperation of a robot society sustain a billion healthy long-lived people for a billion years. That would have many millions of more opportunities for human happiness and thriving.

We can maximize the human species’ health, longevity, and happiness by making our robot society maximize its potentials.

Amanda MacGurn, CDC, Helping humanity to thrive

The goal of this blog is to help humanity to thrive, to help individuals, to help our whole species, to help all the living things, and to project life on into the distant future. The posts on coping with personal problems have received the most page views, but others I consider more important, such as the Earth Ark Project for saving all the species of the world in a South Pole seed bank, have few.

Saving our species from extinction was my reason for leaving my job as a B-47 pilot back in 1960 and I have struggled in various ways to continue with that seemingly impossible task. The impossibility springs from the fact that our stockpile of weapons of mass destruction vastly exceeds the ability of our species to survive their use.

There has arisen a new possibility for our species to move beyond total self-destruction and the concurrent destruction of most of our terrestrial companions. It comes from a source that seems more threatening, and individually more invasive, than the thousands of bombs poised over us, but it is probably the way to our long-term salvation as a living species. Our newly emerging robot systems will evolve into an interconnected robot society and with that there will be a decrease in the need for human labor to create the things modern society wants. Today’s world population clock is at seven billion six hundred million people. I am in favor of humanity and fully support the health of our species, and the planet may sustain a billion for a very long time, but the current population will consume the oil and gas within the lifetimes of today’s children and it is unlikely that wind and solar power can create the energy needed to keep living the way we presently do.

When searching for ideas on how humanity might survive better, it turned out that Amanda MacGurn, a person I know, is on the right track and being much more successful than I am. I have known Amanda MacGurn’s family since moving to Bend seven years ago, and have met Amanda twice, and we had lunch together when she was home on vacation from her job with the CDC (Centers for Disease Control). She works for the most positive organization in the whole world. It is striving to prevent human suffering and death.

Amanda’s job at the CDC is the exact opposite of my job as a bomber pilot in the United States Air Force. Her job is to save people by the millions with appropriate health measures, and mine was to kill them by the millions with H-bombs. I departed my job because it was the ultimate of evil, and she perseveres with hers because it is the ultimate of good. Where I have struggled to find ways to help humanity to survive she has found a way. Thank you, Amanda!

A statement of purpose from the CDC site — “What is the mission of the Centers for Disease Control? CDC saves lives and protects people from health threats. To accomplish our mission CDC conducts critical science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise.”

Since its founding in 1946 more than 50,000 people have worked for the CDC.

Amanda MacGurn is the front page spokesperson for the CDC.

A safer world with robots, Annihilation without robots, In 20 years we will love our robots, Survival with robots

Yesterday my post ended with, “My enthusiasm is to do what I can to bring a robot society into existence which will endure for billions of years.” Most people, when I mention a coming robot society, get worried! What will all the poor people do, they are already finding it impossible to find good paying jobs? I comfort them by saying that most of all traditional jobs will be gone in thirty years and replaced by robots who can do their jobs better and cheaper. The people whose jobs have vanished will be given the benefits that would have accrued to them because the work will be done by the robots and the pay will go to the people.

Temporarily, there will be many new jobs in the form of robot repair and people will be doing jobs that haven’t been replaced by robots … yet. However, human designers and the robots themselves are working on finding those human jobs that the robots can’t do and are redesigning the desired end products to be made by robots so there won’t be any need for human labor. There is no need for humans to do manually skilled things like build houses if they can be prefabricated in a robot factory, hauled in self-driving trucks to the site, and assembled into a house by a robot. The whole house could be designed from beginning to end to be built for a specific person to their specifications by robots. That could be done at present, but of course, it would cost a lot more than doing it with human laborers because of the set-up costs. The difference, in the long run, is that once a single house was built, and the problems solved, the second house would be built much quicker, and cheaper. The third would be even cheaper, and the millionth as automatic as an automatic clothes washer-dryer-fluffer-hanger and totally free of any expensive human work.

Speaking of these robots as independent entities isn’t quite right because almost all of them will be multiply-linked to the main internet-like system. Even the tiny robots will be reliably linked so they can do their assigned jobs, and can’t be shut down, short of physical destruction, but even that destruction is made perfectly controlled with a backup plan. Hidden robot overseers will be watching from a safe distance and observing whatever might be interfering with the operations of the robot. These overseeing robots will tag the problem and other robots capable of responding appropriately will be sent out to fix the problem, and whatever caused it. Currently, humans might resent the robots, but after a while, they won’t be a problem because the robots are there for their protection and advancement, and will be making their lives noticeably healthier, and happier.

When the people become aware that their whole lives are much better because of the robots they too will become watchers to make sure everything is running perfectly.

Robots can and will offer us a safe, healthy society versus the threats of annihilation from H-bombs that we now endure.

Humanities purpose, The great goal, The purpose of life?, This is the purpose of life.

It seemed to me that I was thinking new thoughts, but when I searched my own Probaway site with the word “universe” my new thoughts were already old thoughts. It seems my prayer to help the Universe self-actualize has been written up in some detail in various forms, repeatedly. And yet, I haven’t really had any specific way to proceed with this project, until now.

A prayer to the Universe

A request to the Universe put into a prayer-like petition.

“The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race….It would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever-increasing rate. Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete, and would be superseded.”— Stephen Hawking

What is the life expectancy of the human species? If we could dip into any species that ever lived and look at where it existed in its total lifespan, then half the time it would be in the middle half of its existence. That is a very rough estimate as to where we are at present, but humans as a fully sentient species, that is, having a language with a genetic-based syntax potential have existed only roughly a hundred thousand years. Thus, very very roughly, our species has a hundred thousand years ahead of it. Quite frankly, with the super weapons, like H-bombs, which we now possess, it seems improbable we will last a hundred years. But, just to be kind, let’s give us a thousand times more life expectancy than that, which would mean we are presently halfway through our human experience.

How does our species’ life expectancy compare to the life expectancy of the Universe, which is some thirteen billion years old? If we are halfway through that, which seems far too brief a prediction, then our human life expectancy compared to our Universe’s life expectancy is 13,000,000,000 years divided by 100,000 years which equals 1 part in 130,000, and that is being very generous to our species.

Now compare our life expectancy to the potential of the robot life forms we can create. These robotic things could be designed to self-replicate as a society, and it isn’t necessary for them to be individually self-reproducing like organic things, and they could be made into beings that could last forever. They, as a society, can reproduce themselves precisely and could produce progeny directly and intentionally, that would fit whatever environment they were expecting to be sent to.

We humans can already build machines that can “live” on Mars for years and given a billion years to evolve more sophisticated robots, the robots themselves could make that task into a simple one. Moving to another star system from our sun might take thousands of years of travel time, and that is doable by our evolved robot society but not for us humans. A human-livable spaceship of that sophistication would be enormous, but for robots, a physical spaceship might be quite small.

Moving to other galaxies might be a step too far, even for robot societies, but with so many opportunities for robot societies to arise in other galaxies, given human-like beings to build the robots, the robot societies, over the course of billions of years, could make intergalactic communications. Via radio communication, which would obviously take a lot of time, there could eventually be large parts of the Universe communicating and living a life totally beyond our comprehension. It is our duty if we choose to think of it in that obligatory term, to rise to this grand goal and purpose.

We are a transitional species moving over into becoming robots and by doing so we can live until the end of the Universe.

I want to be a complete human being.

Being a complete human being, Maximizing human life, Survival as an extraterrestrial

Are there reasonable limitations on my desire to be a complete human being that I should obey? As I am a human it would seem reasonable to choose to be a complete one. That would imply that I should seek to experience all that there is to be experienced to have a complete life? These kinds of thoughts have been percolating up spontaneously in my thoughts the last few weeks.

I feel comfortable with my life, and yet even by the most optimistic projections at the age of eighty-two-and-a-half most of my personal life is gone. I have been compensating for this lack of a future by thinking of myself in terms of being more than my personal body and instead as a part of my species and doing what I can to promote my species’ longevity. But that thought doesn’t go very far because it is easy to see where that will soon come to an end also. In the hundred-years future time projection it is difficult to imagine how the natural conflicts that arise between groups armed with super weapons won’t lead to disaster. We have been extraordinarily lucky for the last sixty years since the advent of H-bombs, but that kind of luck can’t last forever.

That world catastrophe even at its worst won’t eliminate all life on Earth, because some life forms live deep underground and thus would be protected from our worst efforts. Thus I, and you too, might choose to identify with life in general, or even to go beyond that and feel an emotional affinity with the materials and processes of the Universe. That might not be very appealing to younger people, but as I said I am now old.

To be a complete human being is to feel a unity with the Universe.
