Finishing tasks, Sonnets, Yard work

These tips from the 147 given by the Seven Sages of Ancient Greece have been rephrased to make them into actionable activities instead of recommended deeds to be completed. By phrasing them as actions it makes it possible to practice them in your mind and in preplanned practice situations. The goal is to form a habit that is automatic when the appropriate situation presents itself.

In our daily lives we are doing many different things and Sage tip #58, “Always finish in some way what you begin,” has value because if we have the habit of completing tasks then there won’t be half-finished things lying around that occupy space and attention. These things can not be put to the use for which they were intended when first working on the item. They must either be worked around, tossed aside or abandoned. That means they are cluttering up your mind and space and it is better to finish them to begin with.

For example, when doing yard work, which is a good example because it can never be finished, do whatever it is that can be done and put the tools away when it’s time to quit. The next opportunity you have to do some more yard work the previous task will be finished and you can begin the next bit of work that then needs doing. The same idea can be applied to studying school homework. Do a specific task to completion, and put a marker there. It could be at the end of a chapter, or a page, or a sentence, but the idea is to know exactly what has been completed so you know what you know and can move on to what is new and needs to be coped with.

When writing a book, or doing other creative projects, it is sometimes impossible to know when you are finished. Every time you come back to a job it seems possible to find new things that can be done to make an improvement, but it is a never-ending process. In the writing group which meets for two hours per week we have a specific process for choosing a verbal writers’ prompt and then we start a timer for forty-five minutes. I always watch the clock so I can do a bit of proofreading before the alarm goes off and I make a point of hitting SAVE when it does. I then go play ball with the house dog while the others struggle with finishing. Their task is more difficult because they don’t know when to quit and even fifteen minutes later they will still be struggling when I come back with a happy dog. You can see my results, which I post under the title Clockwork Purple.

At one time I wrote some standard sonnets such as – The Goal of Marriage. Sonnets are quite fixed in their structure, and like all writing, there are infinite possibilities for improvements, and yet with sonnets, because of the strict limitations, one gets locked into the simple fact that only some words will fit into the plan. Those limitations are actually helpful. Shakespeare was really good at writing sonnets early in his career and it no doubt made it easier for him to write his plays. The point of this post is that …

Putting voluntary limits on tasks will help you to complete them.

In my meditation, I was alone in process

Alexa set timer for 45 minutes

I am such a bore that several times per day people tell me to shut up. They are usually polite in their phrasing of that request, but the message is always clear. This problem began at my very first day in school back at Homedale, Idaho, when I was five years old. I was put into school because there wasn’t anything for me to be doing out on the family farm, and the teacher was my cousin Millie, so it was an easy thing for me to transition from playing at home to playing at school. Homedale was a tiny town at that time and our tiny schoolhouse was big enough for a dozen or so kids, which meant in this case that all of the local kids grade one through three met in that one small room. It didn’t seem strange to anyone that I wasn’t even old enough to be admitted to the first grade in most school districts, but there I was all polished up and filled with smiles sitting in the center of the front row. That seating arrangement was probably so Millie could keep my youthful enthusiasm under control better, but I took it as an honor to be front and center.

This picture was labeled the first day of school. Jr. already has his H.

Within minutes of when the classroom was stuffed with little kids, I began my formal education with Millie informing us of the rules. Basically, that was to sit quietly in our seats until recess times, to pay attention to the teacher, and to raise our hands before speaking. So, immediately I raised my hand and started talking. Millie was standing in front of me and was talking too, so I shut up, but in a few moments a new thought came to me and I started talking again. Millie told me that I must raise my hand before talking. So, once again I stopped talking and Millie continued with her first day’s lesson plan.

A little time went by and I had another thought and raised my hand and started talking. Millie once again told me that I must raise my hand before talking, to which I replied, “Millie, I do have my hand up.” She, rather patiently, told me that I must wait until I am called upon before I start talking. “But,” I said, “Millie, you don’t hold up your hand when you’re talking.”

That was my first day and the first hour of my formal education and it is characteristic of every hour of group meetings to this day. I could give a multitude of examples of that kind of response to my public presence. I think I have a genetic propensity for this style of behavior, and so I don’t feel any particular resentment to people responding to me as if I am a dunce. Later that day I was talking with my grandmother about how I should respond to what I felt was an unfair imposition on my liberty, and she, no doubt, gave me very mature reflections on how I should respond, but in my meditation, I was alone in process and I chose to be who I am and how I am.

Over the years I have done what I saw to be the right thing to do and have been able to get away with being me. It has cost those around me considerable aggravation and that includes those with legal power over me, like my teachers, my commanding officers in the USAF, and the government officials too, including people like Senator Joe McCarthy, and even people at the Bend Science Pub.

All of those people and even Governor Ronald Reagan have lost their battles for control over me.

A randomly chosen prompt, Aingael Rose O'Grady, Clockwork purple, On being loving to others, The Nature of Reality, Writer's prompt creation

Our random prompt came from

and so our randomly chosen prompt is …
“Being loving to others and most definitely to yourself.”
Alexa set alarm for 47 minutes starting now – alarm set

What is at the core of nearly every human being’s needs? That is a question that arises in nearly every philosophical, religious and personal conversation. The philosophers are thinking in the abstract and make sweeping generalizations concerned with truth; the religious authorities make pronouncements that their followers are told to follow even if they themselves are known to be remiss in their obedience to their own words. “Do as I say, not as I do!” is often heard coming from their beard-covered faces. Why the beard? Is it to cover their smirky smile? I don’t really know, and I will give them the benefit of the doubt about their candor. But the people whom I trust the most are the ordinary folks and the very best are the kind old folks.

It is easily observed that old people can usually be divided into kind or nasty. Why the division? Their demeanor comes from a lifetime of personal experience of actually coping with their personal reality. They have created themselves out of their multitude of responses to what actually happened to them. What we see when we observe an older person reacting to events is based on their lifetime of habits for encountering similar situations. What a person does is a summation of their habitual response to their reality, and an old person has had more experience and developed more responses than young ones. That is why it makes sense to find happy old people and interact with them as much as possible so you may automatically learn how to be happy yourself.

“Being loving to others and most definitely to yourself” are words that are to be valued because at the heart of being happy is to be loving to others. That means having a habit of relating to other people as they are and not forcing your personal biases of behavior onto them. That kind behavior requires you observing them and respecting their wants and needs as they are and then you personally going a step further … helping them to survive and get what they want. Yes … to help them get what they want! Not what you want, but what they want. That is being kind! Kind to them.

Hold on, I hear everyone saying, isn’t my personal goal to most definitely be loving to myself? Shouldn’t I be taking care of myself first and when I’ve done that, and then when I am perfectly comfortable, to take whatever energy, time, money, and other personal resources are left to take care of others? “Being loving to others and most definitely to yourself” comes afterward. Me first, me first, always me first, isn’t that what got the most powerful man in the world, the President of the United States, all of the wealth, power and prestige he has acquired?

Okay, he’s got those things but is he happy in the moments we see him, does he appear content, is he using his privileges to help other people? And, to my point, is his personal behavior towards others and himself what any thoughtful person would want for themselves?

I would rather follow Jesus when he said “All things whatsoever you would that men should do unto you do ye even so unto them. For this is the law of the Prophets.” To my mind that means that I should treat other people better than I treat myself. That I should use my personal resources to be kind to others. Following that suggestion does have a positive effect on my habits and my relationship with people. Everyone around me is more satisfied with their situation because they have a person helping them to get what they need and want. But here is the personal reason that helping others is a very good thing to do, even before helping one’s self. Some might say it’s a selfish thing to help the other person first because a person spends far more time with themselves than any other person and if they have cultivated the habit of being kind to others first they will automatically be kind to themselves most of the time. “Being loving to others and most definitely to yourself” ultimately means to be kinder to others than you are to your self because the karma of that activity will come back to you many, many times over. When you reach old age you will find yourself living with the kindest person you have ever met … yourself.

When you reach old age you will find yourself living with the kindest person you have ever met … yourself.

Clockwork purple, Delayed gratification, I finally get a reward

I’ll be eighty-two in two weeks so it’s time for me to start collecting on the delayed gratifications. You know the kid in the psychology experiment that can get two cookies if he looks at a cookie on the plate in front of him for a whole minute while the researcher times how long he can resist eating it.

I love my life and have enjoyed every minute of it, even the ones where I am yelling at my iPhone for too often sending me instructions on how to get to local restaurants when I ask it a philosophically inclined question.

Sitting next to my left elbow is the flower bouquet shown in the picture below. It was given to me at a public reading from Clockwork Purple last week. It is the only physical gift I can think of that has been given to me by a public person. Oh yes, there was the time in 1958 when J. Robert Oppenheimer picked some strawberries from his garden and gave them to me for my hitchhiking trip back to college in Pullman, Washington. But that was a friendly gesture and wasn’t a payment for some act that I had done. And I was given a Darwin Award, but that was as a representative of humanity and the failed Earthark Project. On this blog, I have received a few thank you’s for saving people’s lives, but a lot more flames for being incredibly stupid than thanks. This morning our group of twenty-five thoughtful people was challenged with, “What should we be doing to solve humanity’s problems.” Most of the action that came down to was projecting love and treating our friends well because that would spread throughout the whole world. I listed several things that I have done that probably had a worldwide impact, and I challenged them to find and do some things too. But that went nowhere and I was given the cut-it-short sign by the facilitator. One person said she contacted her politicians daily with requests for action. That was it for public action.

I get my rewards, of course, but not from the public.

The Atlantean Irish by Bob Quinn

Page by Gail – 129. Line by Charles – 12. The prompt will be –

It will be a long hard slog

Timer set for 47 minutes starting now. Done 11:02

It was 10:05 AM, between classes in Nuclear Weapons School there at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, Kansas. Our class of recent USAF pilots had all graduated from one of the half-dozen flight schools at other Air Force bases and had been given B-47 bombers as our combat assignment. We were in training to become America’s most powerful defense ever created, that of providing a twenty-four-hour cap of fully armed H-bombers flying randomly around the North Pole.

In between graduating from flight school and this bomber assignment, I had spent a month at Stead Air Force Base survival school near Reno, Nevada, learning how to survive a winter in such places as Siberia and Northern Canada. The idea of that training was that since I would be spending my next four years flying around Canada with some H-bombs I should learn how to survive on the ground. It was possible that something might happen and I might need to get out of my plane and walk around in that frosty wilderness for a while. There were plans to pick us up but that might take a while. So it would be helpful for me to spend a month learning the basics of how to survive. The classroom information was interesting, and the three days spent in a simulated Chinese Prisoner of War jail was an interesting challenge. It was a long hard slog spending most of a week running around in the High Sierras during the last week of January 1960 with only two days’ supply of WW II K-rations for food. I lost several pounds from hunger, but I had a good time with many stories to tell from that assignment. However, a much bigger problem soon fell on my twenty-three-year-old shoulders.

I found myself now confronted with an actual H-bomb lying there on a special wagon in a room full of other bombs. Some were a little smaller, some were very big and the new one I was looking at was then called a Mark-28. It was called a wooden bomb because it was supposed to be as safe as a log, with all sorts of safety devices that prevented an accidental detonation. All the same, it was designed to be super-reliable when it was detonated and it would kill almost everyone for eight miles in every direction.

Yikes! That’s sixteen miles across. I started thinking. And thinking that I would be carrying several of these things around and at someone else’s command, I would go kill perhaps several million people, almost all of whom were just living their daily lives. That wasn’t defending my country, that was far worse than the most extreme murders by the Nazis. If totally successful in deploying those bombs I would personally kill as many people as Genghis Khan. I was being asked to become the greatest murderer of all history when told to do so.

No. I don’t want to do that. No. I don’t want to have anything to do with that. Yes, I would rather spend 10 years in jail than be responsible in any way for participating in that mass murder and with the retaliations bringing about the destruction of civilization.

My Captain to whom I gave my first letter of resignation said it will be a long hard slog getting out of the responsibility, and indeed it was.

But two years later my buddies were all fueled up and loaded up with H-bombs, sitting in their B-47s, engines running, just waiting for the GO from President Kennedy. It was a crisis in Cuba and the Russians were sending in missiles that would soon be too close to Washington DC for comfort. It turns out Kennedy and General Lemay had drawn an invisible line in the Atlantic Ocean, and if that Russian ship carrying those missiles had crossed that line the launch had already been agreed upon.

I sometimes wonder if my singular refusal to go fly with those H-bombs reached the ears and minds of those decision-making people. It was a long hard slog and I still am in that mud.

If you want to have a sleepless night see your locality on a radius of destruction map.

A hot day in Bend, Oregon, isn’t a problem for us.

Computer problems are annoying, Conversations about dreams, Hot weather fended off.

The temperature was in the upper 90°s F today, but it wasn’t a problem for me. I have an indoor garage for my Subaru Outback so it was comfortable to drive and it has air conditioning so it stayed cool. I parked in the downtown concrete parking structure so it was surrounded by cool concrete until I went home at noon. The two block walk to Dudley’s bookstore was through the structure and then an air-conditioned building and then half a block in sun-shadow. Only when crossing the street was I exposed to direct sun and outside temperature. I have been wearing my fleece jacket while inside of the car which means it was comfortably cool while I was walking. People thought I was crazy to be wearing a cool weather coat and they said so, but I responded that the jacket stays cool for a couple of minutes. Therefore, I am comfortable while they are heating up by being exposed to the sun and hot air. Once I am inside an air-conditioned building again, the jacket helps moderate the chilly wind that is blowing from the forced-air cooling system. So, who’s crazy?

The conversation that was going on was about dreams and almost everyone was eager to talk about their personal experiences. I haven’t been dreaming much lately and generally fall asleep while Debbie is reading to me. When I get up to pee, usually once, I fall asleep within a few seconds of getting back into bed. That has been observed by doing things like counting and observing the number I remember counting too. I count slowly, about one number per second, and rarely remember getting past thirty. Some of the folks were keeping dream journals and were having what to them were interesting events. I may be a bore, but these things don’t relate to my thoughts and experiences very tightly. When I am challenged to be creative in that sense what generally happens to my mind can be read in another group I participate in called Clockwork Purple. That is based on very random sentences selected out of random books. One person picks a page unseen, another picks a line, and another reads the sentence. We all copy that sentence down and write a forty-five-minute story around that quoted sentence. We now have copies in hand of our first book. It’s named Clockwork Purple. I just checked and it’s now available at Amazon.com.

I have been struggling with my new book and with my computer-printer interface. It is very annoying trying to do creative editing and having one’s electronics insist on doing something unexpected. I had to go many drop-screens down into Windows settings to find the problem. That plus shutting everything down and rebooting several times. I now have workarounds that are working.

Life needs some problems to be interesting, but computer problems are just annoying.

——–

It was a brand new Glock Aristocrat 9 millimeter pistol with a matte black finish and an overabundance of gold trim. Embedded in the gold of the pistol were several large diamonds, emeralds, and sapphires set along the side of the barrel and into the handle. It had a variegated ivory handle engraved with the House of Handover’s arrogant Double Eagle emblem. This gun was clearly a masterwork of decorative art created for a special royal ceremony. It was mentioned in the placard below the Aristocrat that it was a very deadly weapon and to emphasize its special deadliness the eighteen bullets loaded into it were said to be made of an amalgam of gold, platinum, and plutonium. Clearly, this gun was made with the intention of solving the kinds of problems that occasionally confront kings, queens, princes, princesses and royal scoundrels.

Public rumor understood that this unique gun was named for Maximilian, one of the more deadly of all of these particular royals’ ancestors, but that was probably idle speculation. The curators for the Royal Museum had mounted Max overnight, pointing straight out, thirteen feet above the gallery floor just above the medieval portrait of their patron Maximilian. The pointing gun was illuminated by hidden spotlights. In the subdued lighting of the gallery, it was spectacular and erotically ominous. Max was a clear message to the assembled royals that their lives were always hanging by the thread of punctilious politeness. If they violated any of the members’ honor or that of their extended family that gun would somehow, miraculously, in the middle of the night come down and correct the situation, permanently.

All eighteen members of the family were there for the dedication of the Weapon of Conciliation.

There had been some recent squabbles. There are always squabbles among the royals because there are always vast sums of wealth floating around with strangely defined terms of ownership. Theirs was an ownership based on millennial-old agreements that were made in now forgotten dialects of dead languages. Now it was an ownership based on bombastic bluster and bodacious bluff.

As would be befitting of such a strange and monstrous occasion the Royal Court Jester would be the one conducting the christening ceremony. After all, who among the royals themselves could do the honors without creating a long and horrible set of confusing entanglements.

After all these snobby aristos were seated by some arcane ritual of ancient prestige and current prominence, facing Max, the ceremony commenced with appropriate solemnity. They first pronounced in unison a solemn-sounding ritualized prayer, praising God and then their ancestors. That was followed by a long paean from their senile elder to the long dead Maximilian, for making it all possible. It was on the third saying of the word Maximilian that it happened.

Everyone sat absolutely stunned. Although a photographer was present, he too was rigid. Everyone was frozen into their royal poses that are usually seen in their carefully arranged family photographs. But, it all happened so suddenly that no photo was taken.

The Jester’s trained capuchin monkey, Little Max, had jumped up the wall to Maximilian’s portrait and easily scrambled directly up its ornate frame to Max the pistol, the Weapon of Conciliation. She grabbed it in her long-fingered hands. She smiled, and unbelievably, lowered the pistol. and pointed it directly at this panic-frozen crowd of royals.

They all instantly recognized that it was their ancestral God. Their revered god of deadly violence, coming to pay them a visit they would never forget.

What happened next was unbelievable.

Burned my hand badly

Housekeeping … Dudley’s bookstore writers group April 24, 2017. We now are committed to publishing a book named Clockwork Purple and we are in our final stages of preparation. All finished date is July 4, 2017.

Today’s prompt was randomly created from a random book picked by J Michael. It turned out to be Beautiful Losers by Leonard Cohen. Then a random page was chosen by Joanna; it was page 63 – and then a line was chosen randomly by Aingeal; it was line 5. And so our random prompt turned out to be … (set timer to 45 minutes GO!)

“Burned my hand badly while holding a red and green fire cone.”

Where to begin telling the problems that erupted that dark and stormy night? We had ascended a cliff on Mt Boring to near a small flat area we had spotted from below and where we intended to set up our overnight camp. It was a perfect day for climbing and camping when we left our cars at a wide place in the dirt road a couple of miles below, but the trail became more difficult than expected and we had wasted an hour on a wrong turn on a confusing fork in the trail. We chose the trail less used but it appeared to be pointed up the direction we were intending to go. It ended up an hour later at a large hole in the ground where some crazy miner probably thought there was something worth digging for and he wasted a month. We only wasted an hour on that detour, but it was an hour that later became critical and brought on our crisis.

Let me mention at this point that if you find this bottle I survived. At least I survived hanging off the cliff long enough to write this essay. You see, we were stuck right here all night while lightning intermittently exposed our perilous situation and pounding wind peeled my friends off the cliff and into the oblivion below. At least while I write this it looks like oblivion. I can see nothing but swirling fog. Perhaps if you find this on a perfectly clear day, like the one we were having such a wonderful time enjoying only a few hours ago, you will see how beautiful Mother Nature can be. However, if you notice piles of human remains below you might get a deeper appreciation of how dangerous our universal mother can be and how her beauty can suddenly turn into your personal ugliness and horror.

I am functionally tied to this crack in the cliff face by my improvised support made of the shoulder straps of my pack wrapped around my thermos bottle and jammed into the crack. I hang here! I’m filled with guilt for leading my friends into this absurd situation and hearing them curse me as they fell from the cliff below – one by one. But what could I do? What can I do now? In a last desperate effort to summon help, while my remaining friends were clinging to the cliff face below, I wiggled out the rescue flare. It was a flare to be used when lost and a rescue party or search airplane was overhead, but here in the wind and fog, it was useless. All the same, they called from below in their desperation for me to do something! Anything! With an impossible twisting about while hanging there in my improvised straightjacket that Houdini would have respected, I succeeded in lighting the flare.

I burned my hand badly while holding the red and green fire cone. I was waving it wildly and screaming at the top of my soon raw voice. There wasn’t any reasonable hope of a savior even hearing me, or any of us; we had all screamed our life out into the fog from a mountain named Boring in the middle of a place on our map named Nowhere.

Remembering Pamela McCorduck

Pamela McCorduck (1940-2021) was my friend in 1981 and came to my home for discussions on Wednesday evenings that Kevin Langdon organized. She had recently published Machines Who Think, a history of the computer geeks creating AI (Artificial Intelligence). She had known and worked with many of them for decades. I felt unworthy of hosting those celebrities who were her friends, but my home and living room were conveniently located in central Berkeley.

Pamela McCorduck 1983 by Thomas Victor. From flyleaf of The Fifth Generation

It wasn’t until my level of social development matured that I realized Pamela was an ideal human being. She was always helpful! In that way, she reminded me of my mother’s mother, who was largely responsible for raising me. However, there were so many women like that in my life that it never occurred to me that they were special. But, even by that high standard, Pamela was special.

In those months that I knew her, we played a few writing games, like my Bend, Oregon writing group’s randomly created challenges. Being an author, she was always working on a new book. Little did I know the book she was working on when I knew her would be published in 1983 as The Fifth Generation – Artificial Intelligence and Japan’s Computer Challenge to the World.

My ever-resourceful librarian wife quickly recovered a copy from our mountains of indexed books, and it was so new looking that it appeared to have been read only once. I started reading it again, and after the two introductory pages, the book begins with a paragraph about Sun Tzu and his book “The Art of War,” with the concluding sentence being: “Knowledge,” says Sun Tzu, “is power and permits the wise sovereign and the benevolent general to attack without risk, conquer without bloodshed, and accomplish deeds surpassing all others.¹” And, there in the “NOTES, page 260 – ¹. Tao and War, Lao Tzu and Sun Tzu, trans. Charles Scamahorn (Berkeley, CA, private printing, 1977).” Apparently, I had given her a copy of that book I had printed but never widely distributed. Pamela must have found that line to be a helpful introductory statement for her seeking new ways to explore and use information.

I probably bought her book soon after it was published and didn’t remember reading that line that was the opening quote from that seminal book about information. The lead author wasn’t Pamela McCorduck but her long-time friend and colleague Edward A. Feigenbaum. Some well-informed people consider him to be the father of Artificial Intelligence and gave him the ACM Turing Award in 1994.

In my fifty years in Berkeley, I spent almost every evening in coffee shops like the Caffè Mediterraneum, on the 2400 block of Telegraph Avenue. I lived as a desultory coffee-shop raconteur in the evenings and a Berkeley campus troll of exciting lectures in the day. It was a fantastic life of constantly meeting incredibly productive people! And I enjoyed being the almost invisible spark that ignited many well-known events. But my relationship with Pamela McCorduck was always quiet, thoughtful, intelligent, future-oriented to creative things. And, as I said above, always helpful because that was at the core of her character. I suspect that everyone who knew her would agree that she was an ideal human being.
