What is the ideal human population for maximizing happiness?

12000 years of civilization, Survival of civil society, Survival of Earth, Survival of humanity

If there were no humans there would be no human happiness to be had but if the Earth had seventy billion people there wouldn’t be any happiness either. With that enormous population there would be more than ten times as many people everywhere and nobody would have space to move about without tripping over another body. The pollution problems would be terrific from human waste alone and very few people could have energy consuming gadgets like refrigerators, stoves or computers, and travel would have to be considered criminally wasteful of natural resources.

My new conception is to maximize the total amount of human happiness in the long run but limit some parts of it in the short run. I have discussed this before in terms of total years of human life because without that there is no possibility for happiness. But now it is necessary to present the things which would permit 12,000 more years of civilization. I state that exact number because it is clearer to be specific than to use the more common generalized word like sustainable. Numerical statements can then be made which helps to make the things being discussed much clearer. For example, the current government often talks about sustainable energy and oil consumption at the same time but if you replace the word sustainable with 12,000 years it instantly becomes obvious that what the politicians mean by sustainable is just until the next election or two. Sustainable to politicians apparently means a couple of years. If you think in the longer terms and are presently a student in university and you can reasonably hope to live for another sixty years. When thought of in that period of time these politicians’ words about sustainable are clearly hopelessly shortsighted and foolish. The world will run short of oil in fifteen years according to the pessimists but the optimists say it will be thirty years. The word sustainable should mean in dynamic balance with natural processes and not until the next election. What I might ask are you going to do for the last thirty years of your life without oil? Thirty years without personal cars like you see everywhere now days is endurable. They probably won’t exist, at least not in large numbers and there may be large numbers of battery driven automobiles to replace them. But when oil becomes too expensive to burn it will be used for farming to make food but the price of food will go way up.Why should you concern yourself with other people or with the future when you can’t even be sure there will be a future? For the very simple reason, you have no choice. It is your future. Some things are fixed and they won’t be changing. The past isn’t going to change although your relationship to it will change. The past and future of the Universe in the grander scheme isn’t going to be influenced much by anything you do or what all of humanity does, for that matter. That’s okay, it’s the universe we live in and the world we live in. But our personal happiness is greatly influenced by our personal behavior and humanity’s happiness is greatly influenced by our species’ group behavior. If humanity could think about itself, in total way in the long run, it would first want to survive, second to maximize its existence and third to be happy. For people to have a chance at happiness there are some minimal conditions which must be met.

First survival must mean the environment is unpolluted with things which injure health. Such things as air, water and food are obvious necessities for life itself and when considering the long run, 12,000 years, the input of our needs and the output of waste must be provided for and cleaned up by the Earth. We can not keep dumping garbage into the atmosphere and ocean forever. With the overburden of the last 200 years of human pollution there would have to be about 200 years for the environment to return to where it was at the beginning of the industrial revolution. That is if there was absolutely no further input of human pollution and the burning of fossil fuels, which is impossible. As beautiful as the world is today it was probably much more beautiful back then but we will never be able to experience that.

The second point before we can maximize total human happiness is to maximize the total number of years of human life. It might be possible to have ten times as many people as we have today, although highly unlikely, and therefore ten times the potential for human happiness but it would be clearly unsustainable even for a single lifetime before some total collapse of the Earth’s ability to sustain that number. Thus a 12,000 year life expectancy of civilization with a peak of 70 billion followed by near total collapse would not yield much potential of total years of human life and little happiness. The pollution problems would be a limit to healthy survival and probably limit the lives of most people in that situation. It seems there could be more people live in the flow of 12,000 years if we had 100,000,000 people living 100 years each (for easy calculation) 12,000 years / 100 years = 120 life cycles. Then 120 life cycles times the number of people living at any given time  of 100,000,000 = 12,000,000,000. That gives approximately the same number of people who will have lived during the next thirty years. So rather than burning up the planet in thirty years of frenzy we would have the same number of people-years to have been lived, it is just stretched out over a much longer period of time. These  distant future people of a smaller population would be living in a much better environment and at least have the opportunity to be much happier and healthier than near future people living in squalor.

The third point is human happiness which is dependent upon survival and then time of survival  and now the quality of life. Happiness, pleasure and contentment are personal things and hard to measure but I like the definitions on the Happiness Scale: “Happiness is a belief that a hoped-for state of affairs is coming into existence. Pleasure is limited to the positive feelings of the moment. and Contentment is the feeling that a hoped for state actually exists.” No one can make another person happy but we can do quite a lot to set up the basic conditions where they might be happy. Basically, that is to provide a place where there are good laws fairly enforced which produces a reliable physical and social environment where everyone can pursue their own interests without harming others.

If we had 100 million people on Earth it would be about the same as the population of 1 AD. That number would be able to live much of the high tech life style which modern humans seem to enjoy but with that number the Earth would be able to recycle all of our waste in a permanently sustainable way. If we were able to discover really low energy ways of doing things we could have more people but that would have to be decided at that future time, after the Earth had recovered from the disruptions of current civilization. The current civilization with its population explosion will almost certainly reach a bursting point within the time of people now living.

I don’t think modern humans are ready for the limitations which would have to be imposed on everyone. And yet, the limitations are few and mild, like limiting your number of children to two and not producing more pollution than some agreed upon limit. Daily life would probably be with fewer restrictions than at present. Part of the reason we now have so many laws and other restrictions is because of the necessity of getting all one can with the minimum expenditure of personal energy. If there were fewer people who each had access to everything they needed there would be far less exploitation of people by other people.

There can be a beautiful Earth with a few people living happily upon it for a very long time.

Happiness with people, How to achieve happiness, How to raise happiness level

I want you to be happy, healthy, wise and wealthy because the greater the number of happy people there are in the world the better off we all will be.

This evening I picked up a book: A Guide to Personal Happiness – by Dr. Albert Ellis and Dr. Irving Becker. I hoped to find some clues on how to improve human happiness. The book is pleasant enough reading and it has techniques for certain types of people to improve their lives. My view of the techniques proposed was that they were good enough sounding but that the people who needed them most probably didn’t have the personal development to apply the techniques suggested. The doctors who wrote these suggestions probably found them to work okay with their clients in a controlled setting but the various suggestions would require outside monitoring and encouragement to be practiced for very long. Until the suggestions become habits they are just words on the printed page. Unfortunately that is probably where they will remain for most readers of this book. Let me quote a bit from page 61 to give a flavor of the type of suggestions they propose.

1. Decide to strive primarily for your own happiness.

3. Decide that you largely control your own emotional destiny.

9. Forcefully act against your irrational Beliefs and inappropriate feelings.

10. Resolve to change, acknowledge that change means hard work, and keep working to implement your resolutions.

On the Happiness Scale of 0-14 these suggestions are aimed at level 3 which is basically Hedonism with the aim of avoiding pain and maximizing the totality of pleasures of the bodily sensations of an extend lifetime. There is little in this book about social interaction and on page 61 they state the height of their underlying motive, “Enlightened self-interest includes the interest of others.” Adam Smith struggled with this  problem of maximizing self-interest over two hundred years ago as discussed briefly in my blog, Why are people good to each other? Smith answers his philosophical dilemma by realizing that social empathy is what helped people to grow. As we mature we learn to project ourselves mentally and feel the pain and pleasure of other people and by doing so we elevate our own potential for human happiness.

The clients of the doctors and the readers of this book would be better served by practicing feeling the emotions of other people. These days with an abundance of TV and other entertainments we have an abundance of opportunities of observing other people in various situations with a multitude of experiential emotions. People living at the Hedonistic level will profit by watching TV sitcoms. Wow, did I say that? However, as soon as people have developed to the level where they have empathy for other people’s feelings they are ready for more social interactions with actual people and organized social groups. The higher one moves along the Happiness Scale the more opportunity there is for long term social interaction. It is in improved social interaction that these people will find more abundant happiness and it is there that these types of self help books could do the most to improve these peoples lives.

How to achieve happiness, human values, humanities survival, What is humanity

This is a post about ultimate human values wherein there will be an effort to state the underlying assumptions and the reasons for the assumptions.

  1. Human beings are the most valued of all things. There is no particular justification for this belief other than I am a human and live within a society of humans. If I were a speaking worm it would be equally sensible of me to say that worms are the highest valued of all things.
  2. Because I value humans I want to maximize their lives and their well being. This consists of life, and the ability to live that life in a way that permits their free access to personal responses to their environmental presentations.
  3. Human life can be measured by total numbers of individuals and by the time which these individuals exist. Thus, simply multiplying the number of humans times the total number of minutes which they live gives a measure of the sum of humanity.
  4. Humanity had a beginning, is at its middle and will have an end. I assume that humanity is at the mid-point of its existence because if you picked an individual from any species that ever lived it will almost always be living in a middle condition of its species.
  5. Humanity is defined as beginning 12,000 years ago. This is not the beginning of the species but it is the beginning of large scale organizations which we have developed into civilizations. It is also the beginning of agriculture and the organized control of natural processes. It is also the end of the ice age and the beginning of what is known as the Holocene.
  6. Humanity is defined as ending 12,000 years in the future. This is obviously an arbitrary number simply based on the assumption that humanity is at its civilized midpoint. It gives us a handle on defining the magnitude of the problems facing us and thus implies the ways and means for coping with the problems which will inevitably arise. A billion happy people living for 12,000 years ought to be able to fully explore that ecological niche.
  7. Human beings prefer being happy to being miserable. This seems obvious but one may easily observe that where population exceeds the carrying capacity of its environment the individuals’ lives are nasty, brutish and short. These times and places are also filled with very high birth rates with most individuals dying while they are still quite young.
  8. Living to the maximum years of one’s biological potential implies living a good life. Populations which have lower fertility tend to live longer and on into old age. They are happier, healthier, wiser and wealthier most of that time because to achieve these things they must be living in a satisfactory environment. A long life defines a good life.

When looking at humanity with the very long 12,000 year perspective it becomes obvious to demographers that fertility must be very near replacement value of two children per woman and that the rate of population expansion of the last 400 years would if continued for 12,000 more years consume every atom in the universe. Humanity, within the potential lifetimes of children now living, will go through a massive realignment of attitude relative to the birth of new children. Because of the wild swings of what will happen and what people will desire after these happenings it becomes impossible to predict anything other than to say it will be very different than what has gone on during the living memory of everyone now inhabiting planet Earth. To attempt to forsee the possibilities and guess the probabilities may be helpful in that it permits one be prepared for the events. It is impossible to know the precise events or when they will happen but it is possible to make general preparations. Some obvious generalizations are, “Don’t do stupid things.” “Keep yourself and your loved ones as healthy as possible.”

If one came back to Earth 10,000 years in the future and found 6.8 billion people you could say that on average the women had two children each. If there were 1,000 times as many people, at that time, it would be 6.8 trillion (standing shoulder to shoulder) but it would require a birth rate of only 1/7th of one percent greater than the replacement rate to achieve. See: How Many People Can the Earth Support? by Joel E. Cohen p. 154. The total birth rate to reach this phenomenal number would be absolutely imperceptibly different from simple replacement rates but because of compounding interest over this long period of time the world population would become a totally incomprehensible huge mass. What this means is that if we are thinking about humanity in this longer time base, that means our thinking must recognize that on average each woman has two children which reach reproductive maturity. At present there are absolutely no controls on world fertility even though there are some local laws because people can move from one area to another and avoid the restrictions.”The Earth’s human population must ultimately approach a long-term average growth rate of zero. This is a simple mathematical fact, not subject to the whims of wars or elections or with or chance. It is the one irrefutable proposition of demographic theory.” p. 154

If we want to have a stable world over a 12,000 year period it will be necessary for people to limit themselves to two children. This can be done the easy way through human cooperation (effective regulation) or the hard way through Natural Processes (War, Famine, Disease, Etc.). Humanity has chosen the hard way so far and doesn’t seem likely to give it up. We could keep hopping along with the same old hopes for another 12,000 years except for our growing stockpile of super weapons which will probably bring about a boom and bust situation on a very grand scale.

It would seem logical that people would be willing to give up some of their poverty, their famines, their wars and their excess children for an average of ninety years of happy, healthy, wise and wealthy life. It just doesn’t seem likely.

We all do a lot of thinking and working which isn’t necessarily helping us to maximize our happiness and well-being. The Happiness Scale shows a direction to go for improving your behavior and maximizing your total happiness from any behavioral place you happen to find yourself. Well-being is a bit different from happiness, because it emphasizes more the physical condition of people rather than the mental and behavioral states. The various Probaway blogs on the subjects of Lifehavens and the Earth Ark are an attempt to maximize the physical genetic survival of humans, and other existing life forms. That is the extreme example of wellbeing, but some more mundane habits are needed for daily use. The Happiness Scale is similar and makes a good point of departure for creating a parallel scale and it might be called a Wellbeing Scale.

Scaled~# – Explanatory sentence

WELL~0 Intentional suicidal acts intended to destroy one’s physical being.

WELL~1 Reveling in personal extreme risk, and the enjoyment of violating other people’s natural rights.

WELL~2 Seeking out known hazards to health and wellbeing, for rebellion and quick unearned pleasures.

WELL~3 Conforming to some legally accepted standards of behavior, but which are known to be unhealthy.

WELL~4 Excessively doing something which is generally healthful, but the excess creates problems.

WELL~5 Living with other people in the generally accepted ways of cleanliness, and routine behavior.

WELL~6 Healthy living is achieved, and being maintained by careful exclusion of non-appropriate things.

WELL~7 Superior life is attained by careful virtuous behavior aimed at developing a personal ideal.

WELL~8 Setting examples of life enhancing behavior which can be followed by others.

WELL~9 Constructing a local environment within which everyone can flourish.

WELL~10 Overseeing the public environment which helps everyone to be healthy and productive.

WELL~11 Dedicated efforts to find new and better ways for enhancing health and wellbeing of everything.

WELL~12 Enhancing the genetic life force in all creatures to maximize their potential for healthy individual life.

WELL~13 Creating new life forms which will better utilize the energy provided by natural energy sources.

WELL~14 Physical perfection is being manifest, and is encoded for all time and all inhabitable places in reliably recreatable forms.

The ancient Greeks thought that happiness was an achievement but most modern people have associated it with short-term pleasure. This chart has emphasized that ancient interest in the long-term aspects of human vitality so the impact of a person’s actions are set into a more historical perspective. The issues that matter most are issues about living our human lives in the most vital way possible and not about momentary feelings or desires.

That quote is from the comments section under the Probaway – Happiness Scale from which this Wellbeing Scale was derived.

Happiness is available for everyone.

happiness, Human happiness, Life success, Long term happiness

Why do so many people settle for a lesser form of happiness when more enjoyable happiness is readily available to almost everyone? It seems that the majority of people strive for Hedonism as their life goal where that is only maximizing the totality of pleasures of the bodily sensations over an extended period of time and over their personal lifetime. These people settle for far less pleasure than if they expanded their goals to the easily attained next step up the Happiness Scale of Beatitudoism which is by joining their effort to find happiness with other people by the intimate connection with the ultimate group spirits through the use of group-work and ritual. Such easily attained things as going to a football game or attending an organized social function such as a church instead of sitting alone, and getting drunk or high on drugs. From that easily attained social action it is easy to move up a bit to Socialism by joining with a group and its goals for the maximizing of its, and by association one’s own well-being.

With these few simple steps a person can achieve much more happiness over the period of a week or a lifetime, and these more social activities have the additional pleasure of helping their fellow humans to have more meaningful and happy lives. So why is it that there are so many people who seem to think that getting high is the goal of life? Why instead do so many people slip from Hedonism down the Happiness Scale into Eroticism, and the maximizing of the immediate pleasures of the body, emotions, and personality without much thought of time, and the sudden evaporation of what little erotic pleasure they do attain? From that low state on the scale they easily slip into Anarchism, and seek the immediate release from all imposed limitations placed by the realities of the environment on their thought and behavior. That typically devolves into loss of all they have, and penury, which can at any moment then slip into a state of Survivalism, where the primary goal of life then becomes the survival of the physical body, and the forlorn hope for some survival of personality after death. From any of these states of happiness one can easily be overtaken by sudden unexpected death, but the lower on the scale one chooses to reside the more likely that sudden death becomes.

There are ultimately as many reasons for why people are where they are as there are people, and moments of individual consciousness, but perhaps there are some generalizations. All of the lower states are easily attainable without much thought or consideration for the future which requires a higher form of thought, generally termed forethought. That requires some personal effort, but doesn’t require much in the way of intelligence, and any human with near average intelligence can think about cause and effect, and make some plans for the future, for tomorrow. So why don’t they? Perhaps it’s the mental effort, and perhaps it is the going against the social dynamic of the moment or perhaps it’s the milieu of the media in which they are immersed, or into which they have immersed themselves, or perhaps it is that thinking about the future is almost alien to human ability.

The following states require increasingly more of the qualities of self control and forethought, but that of Epicureanism, the maximizing of total pleasure through the possession of artfully prepared items of beauty, doesn’t require much, and is similar to Hedonism except that it has much more forethought and planning. The next step up the Happiness Scale is Stoicism which is the using of virtuous behaviors of courage, physical and ethical behavior as the ideal lifelong goal, and directing force of personal behaviors. From there it is an easy step to channel those qualities into Energeiaism, which is the action and application of a person’s virtues to the best ends available to the individual and the group. This state is capable of giving long term happiness and  a pleasurable life to almost anyone who chooses to live that life style. However, to a person comfortable at that condition the next step is available and readily attained by most people. Eudaimoniaism, which is living the long well balanced life utilizing a middle path of moderation in all activities. That is a person simply living in comfortable and socially productive harmony with their environment, with the people, and with whatever their life confronts them.

These next higher states are increasingly not available to everyone, because they require qualities that many people do not possess. Authoritarianism which requires the social, political and personal power under group sanctioned and monitored guidance. To attain this state the individual must have some power of leadership, and the ability to garner the support of other people. These people have power because it is granted to them by others because these other people trust them to use it wisely. Sometimes they are wrong because the person chosen doesn’t possess the qualities, but only appears to possess them. Scienceism is the finding and testing, proving to peers and publishing to all the natural facts of existence. This state doesn’t require a day to day leadership quality, but it does require the ability to convince others of the correctness of their ideas. Utilitarianism is the utilizing of all available resources to maximize humanities survival and population vigor. This is such a rare condition that only the founders of religions or other organizations possess these qualities. The highest state on the Happiness Scale is Constitutionism, which is the analysis of social bodies with the intent of creating better and healthier societies. There are few people who even think of doing such things, but when they are successful they bring about the greatest health, vigor and happiness for humanity. They create the greatest happiness, and therefore are rated the highest on the Happiness Scale.

Aristotle, happiness, Imhotep

Aristotle from the Louvre. Aristotle – The father of abstract happiness.

The question of happiness goes back to Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC), and no doubt far before him, because he wrote so thoroughly about it that there had to be a long oral tradition which preceded him, and upon which he built his theory. He considers many approaches to Happiness in Nichomachean Ethics, but in the end he taught that the middle path between an excess of an activity, and an excess of a non-performance of the activity, was the best path for the individual. In fact he could not possibly have practiced what he taught because he wrote so very much, and thought so very deeply that he was obviously driven to that extreme of productivity by some other motivation. However, it is that motivation, which by my philosophy he was practicing, which is the highest form of happiness, and he was doing so at the very highest level.

Aristotle himself was practicing what is called Theoria, which is defined as the creation of wisdom enhancing methods with the benefits available to everyone and everything. His path of the Golden Mean was a fine and beneficial path to happiness for almost everyone, but it wasn’t for him because he wasn’t only a member of society, he was a creator of societies, and it might be well argued the creator of Western Civilization.

Imhotep statue Imhotep about 2630 BC

There are a few others which might be called the creators of civilizations; Imhotep comes to mind. He could be called the creator of the classic Egyptian civilization which persisted for some two and a half THOUSAND years. He not only created much of the style of their physical world, but also created much of the society, and intellectual traditions. No doubt much of what he created is still with us today, but it is like the air we breath, we can not live without it, but we are rarely aware of its importance.

Happiness Scale thumbnail image Probaway – Happiness Scale

Those two people were functioning at the highest level on the Probaway – Scale of Human Happiness.

The scale is based on the total amount of time that the benefits are being experienced by human beings. It defines happiness as a belief that a hoped-for state of affairs is coming into existence. Survival in the moment is always necessary, and without that there is nothing for the individual, but the thoughts of the moment evaporate with the moment and are forgotten. However, at the other end of the scale, (progressing from Survivalism toward Theoria) there are longer, and longer periods of time that the hoped-for state of affairs continues to exist. In the case of Aristotle, and Imhotep the hoped-for state lasted for thousands of years and to some degree is still on going. The time, and effort they spent creating their happy worlds has had an enormous multiplier effect, and vast numbers of people have felt and others are still enjoying their personal hoped-for states because of these two peoples’ profound thoughts, and efforts. Truly, they helped us to live life, and live it more abundantly.

The concept of assigning numerical values to intangible entities poses a significant challenge, as many things cannot be quantified as a collection of discrete units or points in an infinite line, area, volume, or non-Euclidean space. This problem is further compounded by the fact that there is no limit to the number of things that might exist, and everything can be divided, at least conceptually. Even a point, which is defined as being infinitely small, can be divided into directions that radiate from its given location, albeit so minuscule that it exists only in our imaginations. This conundrum has perplexed mathematically inclined philosophers for two millennia, dating back to Euclid’s fifth proposition.

However, delving too deeply into such relationships without sufficient knowledge can lead to erroneous conclusions. Nonetheless, the inability to quantify certain abstract concepts, such as happiness, which has infinite potential dimensions, remains a perplexing issue. In an attempt to address this, I have created a chart called the Happiness Scale, which assigns numbers to various levels of happiness and its antithesis, unhappiness. The scale also incorporates several other related concepts within the numbered system.

The impetus for this new project stems from Morgan Housel’s book, “Same as Ever – Timeless Lessons on Risk, Opportunity, and Living a Good Life.” While the book is undoubtedly insightful and worth reading, Housel’s writing technique of overstating his thoughts provoked me to compile a list of words he claimed were unmeasurable. On page 178, he asserts, “We can see and measure just about everything in the world except people’s moods, fears, hopes, grudges, goals, triggers, and expectations. That’s partly why history is such a continuous chain of baffling events, and always will be.” Housel’s claim that terms like happiness cannot be measured is debatable, as I have already created tools like the Happiness Scale, and the English-speaking world commonly employs scalar values in everyday conversations. The ubiquitous phrase “Don’t judge me!” underscores the prevalence of this practice.

Motivated by these observations, I have embarked on a series of posts to create a first draft of the long list of words that Housel suggested were unmeasurable. Through this endeavor, I aim to explore the possibility of quantifying and measuring seemingly intangible concepts, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of the human experience.

AI measuring human Maturity

Paths to human maturity
Paths to human maturity.

In 1995, I created this chart to show human maturity and how it responded to environmental stress, Time-binding, and Current attention.

My presentation on promoting maturity.

Today, I was the facilitator for the Human Development group, and as part of that job, I was to give a short presentation on some relevant subjects to get the discussion fired up. Our group is usually about twenty-five people, most of whom have been professional counselors, and some are actually on their pay clock while with us. Most of these people have been helping others who are failing at some aspect of their lives and were either assisting in some form of state-sponsored help or helping people seeking professional guidance.

My presentation was aimed at helping people who were already moving along my March 29, 2016 maturity scale — Infant – Child – Adolescent – Adult – Mature – Sage – Ourora. The idea presented in that scale has been upgraded some since that post with the addition of the post – How to direct what is called growth toward maturity.

“The idea for this new direction of growing toward maturity is, “When you are feeling good and have time and energy to do something different from your routine, choose to avoid childish actions and do actions that are as mature as possible.” That is a generalization that should work in all cultures.

Create more mature habits when you have the chance to do so.

The five-minute presentation went smoothly enough and included the example of a family skiing with behaviors mentioned for infant through sage. There were several complaints from the group that I was misbehaving by telling people what they should do. I responded that I was only suggesting that they consider choosing the more mature option of the opportunities placed before them and that the best time to examine and choose those options was when they felt most free and expansive. I had chosen the family skiing excursion as an example because, in that situation, there were opportunities to explore and demonstrate more mature behaviors for each of the defined levels.

There were complaints about my putting people into boxes—infant through sage—and that people are individuals, not categories. What could I say in response but that I agree with them? But when speaking, we must communicate with words, which are inherently defined boxes. What I was trying to convey was a way of coping with one’s life in a way that would develop habits that would serve them better in the long run.

To this end, going on a child-safe trail and doing a search and rescue mission with children would automatically give a child a mature orientation to a situation. A child can participate in helping others in the community, which is a mature activity. Those acts by an older and presumably mature person would not tell a child what to do but would illustrate what could be done. The skiing would be just as much fun for the child, and they would be developing their skiing skills. Still, they would also be developing adolescent proof of self-worth, adult participation in a worthwhile family activity, maturity in doing something worthwhile for the greater community, and possibly being sage-like in that they were illustrating how a person could set an example for all of the people of the world to observe and learn a worthwhile lesson.

This was my first public talk on how to develop more mature habits.

The chart above is a multidimensional presentation of human personality under normal living conditions. It may be helpful when referring to existing scales and developing new ones. It is an ordinal scale with differences (Mature, Adolescent, Adult, Mature, Sage) with defined stages. This three-dimensional presentation includes Environmental stress, Time-binding maturity, and Current attention. Also, the chart is designed to be converted into sentences, as seen below.

Levels of wisdom based on stress and maturity.

COMMENTS

The chart at the top is a multidimensional presentation of human personality. It is used here to help refer to existing scales and develop new ones. This three-dimensional presentation was designed to be converted into sentences, illustrating a complex multidimensional theory linearly.

CONCLUSIONS

The multidimensional chart will be helpful when developing a theory of scales intended to reveal existing ones latent in conceptual reality so they can be discovered, developed, and published for others to use. The ultimate goal is to explore, as thoroughly as possible, the paths to an understanding of universal reality.

Galileo Galilei (1564 – 1642) was an Italian astronomer and the father of modern experimental science. All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.

Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei, a natural philosopher of astronomy

Probaway maximizing on Galileo

1. Nature changes by its own laws with no thoughts or concern for humans, although we may discover precursors to its actions.

2. The Milky Way consists of a vast number of stars radiating light and other materials reflecting and filtering that light.

3. The sun, with all those planets and other stuff revolving around it and depending upon it for their orbits, can still warm us, even in winter.

4. Emotional passion for discovering why things are as they are compels some men to seek intellectual answers, and when they find things, they are called geniuses.

5. The most stupendous inventions were speaking and communicating complex thoughts, writing those thoughts, and projecting them through time and space.

6. Most truths are self-evident after a genius has revealed them, but finding them requires a genius.

7. I never met a man so stupid he didn’t know where to pee, but I have been accused of such things.

8. In science, a thousand doctors’ authority on a subject doesn’t compete with a simple demonstration you can repeat yourself.

9. By denying the methods of science, you can prove anything.

10. Observable facts reveal truths when the fogs have been blown away.

11. People don’t learn how reality functions from a recitation of other people’s discoveries, but we can show them how to discover it for themselves.

12. People lust after hopes of eternal life, so they revere diamonds as being forever as proof that they can attain immortality.

13. Measure what is measurable, and seek to make ways to measure what hasn’t yet been measured but could be measured.

14. Doubt is the promoter of an invention to some and the prevention of inventing to most.

15. By employing the methods of a magician, you can prove anything.

16. Mathematics is a method with which man can impose order on a seemingly chaotic universe.

17. There are different methods for modeling different things, and perhaps there are an infinite number of things that can be modeled and an infinite number of models that can be made for each of these infinite things.

18. You can lead a man to wisdom, but you can not make him drink.

19. A description of the universe can be outlined with mathematics, but it won’t nourish you when consumed.

20. There are a few who think clearly, but there are multitudes that live in hallucinations.

21. To discover the truth about natural phenomena, we must begin with experiments and demonstrations and leave the supernatural to the Scriptures.

22. The church does not feel bound to respond to experiments based on natural phenomena.

23. The scriptures show the ladder to our spiritual heaven, and it isn’t concerned with astronomy.

24. People argue vehemently over things they know little about and softly about things of which they have vast experience.

25. Ill luck in our earthly lives teaches us to disdain worldly pleasures and seek a closer bond with heavenly ones.

26. The tiny spark of true reason coming from a single man is more valuable to humanity than thousands of wild opinions.

27. A well-spun paradox is a beautiful distraction for the conventional mind.

28. The gift of life from providence must be praised, including the hardships and suffering it provides.

29. It is harmful to men’s souls to make it a heresy to speak of what is easily seen in natural reality with one’s own eyes.

30. A shriek of horror may come from humanity one day because of the scientific discoveries about the natural world.

31. “I curse and detest the said errors and heresies, and generally all and every error, heresy, and sect contrary to the Holy Catholic Church.”

32. Dissemination of the truth stimulates the growth of the arts.

33. The increase of known truths stimulates wisdom and not its destruction.

34. Shall we laugh or cry when the religious leaders refuse even to admit the earth went around the sun until 1992?

35. The Classical Greeks would have agreed with us and judge as we judge if they had the use of our telescopes.

36. We can see how the power of more precise measurement can change the entire understanding of what we see.

37. Names are conventions for talking about identifiable things, and as more observations are made, the name stays the same, but we can say more about the thing and its qualities.

38. God endowed us with senses, reason, and intellect for our usage to better understand and utilize this world we inhabit.

39. Are words written thousands of years ago to be trusted above easily observed current facts when the words have been translated and changed their meanings?

40. Every particle of the universe has responded at every moment to the situation it resided in, some of it random in tiny ways, but the end effect is that everything is in exactly the right place at every moment.

41. On an astronomical scale the fact that living things resided here on earth made no difference until we launched space-faring rockets.

42. If the angels were immortal, why would they descend to the earth to live mortal lives of dread and death?

43. In natural science, an honest researcher’s will has nothing to do with the results of experiments, and facts in books do not override their experiments.

44. Many men form ideas that please them and will defend those ideas with their lives and eliminate yours even though their concept is a fantasy.

45. It is a travesty of justice to make a heresy of observations that are easily demonstrated.

46. The destruction of states results from placing incompetent judges with mortal punishment at their whim over experts of scientific experiments.

47. Physical experiments upon the natural world must not be condemned because of a comparison to an interpretation of a biblical text.

48. The discussion of natural problems must begin with contemporary natural experiments rather than interpretations of ancient scriptures.

49. It is counterproductive to insist that astronomers don’t see what they do see and not understand what they do understand, and instead to assert they discovered what they have not discovered.

50. The church has no difficulty in finding men to preach the heresy of modern astronomy from every pulpit.

COMMENTS

It is shocking that Galileo Galilei was condemned for reporting what he saw when he looked through his telescope and was sentenced to life in prison on June 22, 1633, by the Church. But he thought house arrest was the better option than jail and he chose to recant and his sentence was commuted to house arrest. He then dedicated himself to studying and writing about kinematics and strength of materials and made major discoveries and improvements in those fields and others. It wasn’t until 1992, 359 years after Galileo was condemned, that the church admits the Earth goes around the Sun.

“To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin.“ [Cardinal Bellarmino, 17th Century Church Master Collegio Romano, who imprisoned and tortured Galileo for his astronomical works, during the trial of Galileo]

And yet it moves! This quote is probably misattributed to Galileo and is now promoted by the modern popular media’s idolizing of heroes mouthing off at those with physical power over them.

Galileo’s recognition of the discovery of writing and printing seems so obvious now. Of all other stupendous inventions, what sublimity of mind must have been his who conceived how to communicate his most secret thoughts to any other person, though very far distant, either in time or place? And with no greater difficulty than the various arrangement of two dozen little signs upon paper? Let this be the seal of all the admirable inventions of man. It is now obvious that without speech, writing, printing, and the internet humanity would be a pitiful animal. Doesn’t everyone know and acknowledge this obvious fact? All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.

In questions of science, the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual. Of course, this is true. It is even a truism, but it is false if the individual isn’t basing his reasoning on a solid theory based on proven experimental facts that can be tested and corroborated by other objective observers. It isn’t the reasoning that holds primary authority, as is proposed by this famous quote, it is the factual evidence, combined successfully with a background of established tested evidence and a reasonable theory of why these things behave as they do. When these things are arranged and demonstrated clearly a single individual’s reasoning can stand above the reasonings of all hundred billion people who have ever lived.

[ Just for fun – we may calculate what a single individual’s thought in total humanity experience means by using a meter stick. The smallest mark on a typical stick is 1mm, and that’s about equal to a thick pencil line. Now imagine a single human individual as a cubic millimeter 1mm x 1mm x 1mm or approximately the size of a large grain of sand (or very small pebble). By comparison, the total volume of the human population to ever live equals that 1 cubic mm measured out using a meter stick to form a cube – 1,000mm x 1,000mm x 1,000mm (that’s about the volume of a large dining room table) times 100 meters. By this measure total humanity is a group of cubic meters placed side by side the length of a football field including one end-zone. That makes me feel small in comparison, but it makes me realize just how important a really new idea is. A new idea is a few seconds thought in only one of these tiny grains in a whole lifetime. ]

Measure what is measurable, and make measurable what is not so. Attributed to Galileo. Measurement gives a person a better grasp of many things, and it’s hard to think of distance not having some measure, or time, or weight, or economic value, or even happiness.
