81
Those who know the Tao do not display their virtues;
Those who display their virtues do not know the Tao.
Peacemakers attract contention out of existence;
Contentious people draw forth conflicts out of peace.
Knowing ones draw forth right learning;
Learned ones draw forth rigid knowledge.
—
Sages do not bother with personal accumulation;
They work for others, and all around them are rich;
And because they work for all humanity,
All humanity prospers greatly.
The way of the Tao is to draw but never to pull;
The way of the sage is to accomplish with attractive acts,
and never to contend.
