A couple of us guys checked out the Brooks Room at the Bend downtown public library and did a test run of a potential discussion group we named Logophilia – The love of words and word games. Words can be fun, funny, functional, fabulous, felicitous, fictitious, fake, phony. – Join us in conversation about words…weird, wild, wonderful words.
Our intent is to have a theme for each meeting, and this first one was based on each of us talking about special words and concepts associated with something we know and the public would benefit from knowing. From our computer geek, we got computer terms, such as Database-normalization, which turned out to be an important way of looking at reality. From the retired professional cook we got culinary terms, like bâtonnet, Julienne, chiffonade, buerre blanc, scimitar, and mise en place (everything in place for tomorrow). Each of these words has specific meaning and it was because French cooks have dominated the quality cuisine restaurants here in America. One of our attendees was a professional fundraiser and gave us many words and concepts which they use to link a potential donor to appropriate philanthropies. From a graphic design artist, we got words for text layout and typeface details. From a librarian, there was a special vocabulary for documenting things so they can be discovered by patrons.
There were other special vocabularies discussed by people who were familiar with something they thought would be valuable for people to know. Everything flowed smoothly, except we didn’t have the right connecting cable to get the ceiling projector to work, so we missed a couple of warm-up videos.
One thing became apparent,
Having a knowledge of the proper vocabulary for a specific task facilitates getting the job done and done well.
