I was chatting with some buddies in Dudley’s Bookstore, my local coffee shop and conversation spot, when it was proposed I do an online video show. I would interview various curious people in our little city located at 3600 feet altitude at the transition point between the volcanoes of the Cascade mountains and 200 miles of unpopulated high desert. It would probably be life stories of various local people, illustrating just how different people can be in a remote small American city.

I know scientists, including those whose career was at CERN, and various horse people, cowboys, and dog people; forest firefighters, swimming pool life guards, liberals, atheists, spiritualists, Catholics, bookish folks and non-literates. Radical politicos, office holding politicos, politico wannabes, I have met our US Senator, and a triple threat almost Senator. Also, there are Olympic medal winners around, bicycle pros, and as there are some 22 golf courses for our hundred thousand locals, there must be a couple of curious golfers here, although strangely I don’t know any. There are actors, improv-ers, and standup comics; painters, musicians, and poets whom I do know.

Everyone has a story to tell, and if the title of the show was Curious Conversations, the unusual events of these people’s lives could be emphasized. This might be a lot better than listening to the late-night TV personalities, because those people are all the same. They claim to be different and quirky, but they are all in the same profession and the road to the top is very narrow. Ordinary people have vastly different priorities than celebrities, and therefore very different personalities and much more unique stories to reveal. Celebrities do a great job of pretended lives, but this show would aim at revealing the extraordinary qualities of real lives, and do so in a real way, and not mocking them as do the usual interviews of ordinary people on the talk shows.

Curious conversations would be a true reality show about ordinary people’s personal stories.
