America is wonderfully varied when seen from the air. Heading east from San Francisco one first sees the beautiful San Francisco Bay with its surrounding cities with low mountains. There is an abrupt edge between the water and the cities but also an abrupt edge between the cities and the mountains. Between these low mountians there are highways which go inland to smaller cities squeezed into valleys. All of the cityies are build on what was choice farm land a hundred years ago. It is strange that the best farm land is also the best place to build a city which destroys the farms. The problem is worsened by the automobile which permits people to live in suburbs which cover up even more farm land per person than the cities do with their high rise buildings. With world population projected to double in about fourty years at current rates of growth it becomes a question as to where they are going to build
