Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World is a self-help book for humanity. It lays out ways for getting massive numbers of humans to voluntarily cooperate in solving the really big problems facing humanity. Jane McGonigal lays out clear overviews of what is wrong with mundane reality and then gives workable techniques for converting  those poorly working systems into dynamic problem-solving communities of committed workers. Like so much of our recent technical past, it is based on “game theory”. Games are defined as having: a goal, rules, a feedback system, and voluntary participation. “Playing a game is the voluntary attempt to overcome unnecessary obstacles,” is a basic premise. The techniques of organized games and game theory have been developed into what have been remarkable real-world success stories. Wikipedia has many of the qualities of a game, and this most remarkable encyclopedia of all time has all been done with volunteer effort. So too with Craig’s list, etc..

If you are a game player this is definitely a book for you. If you are a parent and are angry at your kid for playing too many games on their computer, this book is definitely for you too. The computer and the people communicating with each other using computers are going to join together and create the future of our world. Predicting the future is for fools, so I will prove myself a fool again and say, “Every self-made billionaire and most self-made millionaires of the next thirty years will be computer whizzes of some sort.” So, if you want to become rich, get really good at online communication and organized games.
