Gerald I. Shulman from HHMI at Yale University School of Medicine spoke to a distinguished audience here at UC Berkeley. The subject was:
Cellular Mechanisms of Insulin Resistance: Implications for Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes and the Metabolic Syndrome
This was a very technical lecture and most of it was beyond my background but even so there [...]

A surviving population of only one million people would probably be the result of a disaster DISS~11 such as a major atomic war. This type of war would strike the Northern Hemisphere much harder because that is where ninety percent of the people live and where much greater than ninety percent of the targets of [...]

Today Marin County library had its annual book sale. There were lots of books and quite a few older Marinites. It was all very clean, civilized, organized and pleasant.
The hardcover books were $3 each so a bagful added up rather quickly.
These women appear to be looking for Waldo but I don’t think he’s in the [...]

Today was another Med day and along the way the new Cody’s Book Store was just cleaning its windows, opening for the first time on Shattuck Avenue in downtown Berkeley.
After a couple blocks walk I come to the back of the old Cody’s bookstore on Telegraph Avenue. This flowered gate is directly behind the old [...]

he best place to search for a location for a Lifehaven would be in the Southern Hemisphere coupled with an island, and with some large existing caves. The search begins with a Google search, a Wikipedia search, a Flickr search, YouTube search and a Google Earth look at the discovered sites.
Easter Island has a few [...]

Google Earth offers a interactive map of the Earth which makes it an easy tool to use for searching for possible Lifehaven locations. The basic Lifehaven is an underground self sustaining community of one thousand people designed with the purpose of surviving a world disaster that killed all other humans located outside of each individual [...]

How would we cope with a billion people suddenly dying? On the Probaway Disaster Scale this is a DISS~9. The most likely precipitating cause of a disaster of this scale is a major war or a major disease pandemic but there will probably be secondary causes such as famine or lack of resources such as [...]

Any disaster DISS~10 (death of 6.5 billion people) that dropped human population to 100 million (about 1.5% of current population) people would probably strike most heavily in the Northern Hemisphere. The most probable cause, an atomic war, would devastate the north more severely with its primary blast effects but the secondary effects, fallout and sun [...]

Humanity’s survival into the next millennium is important to me so I am trying to enhance the possibility of that happening by creating probable scenarios after a Doomsday event with different sizes of surviving populations as a base for the re-establishment of civilization. They are based on the Probaway – Disaster Scale. This post will [...]

This biography of John Adams is quite a show, a gorgeous spectacle beautifully produced and filmed but it is not without its annoyances. For those of us who have been forced to live with gravity for most of our lives the near constant reorientation of what is down and what is sideways generates a frequent [...]
